I need peoples help!! Maybe not a good idea, but i'm as trek obsessed as we all are and my newish girlfriend wants to check it now.

I guess i'm looking for an episode (not TOS) that encompasses as much of the whole trek feel and ethos in one show? In an ideal world i'd start marathoning from the beginning, but i can't let encounter at farpoint be the first cos she'd never watch it again....i'm surprised i did!

My first thought...

Where Silence Has Lease (TNG s02e02) seems to at the moment be the top contender for this? It has everything classic trek, ships, spatial anomalies, romulans, powerful curious noncorporeal alien species. It's not a favourite episode at all but i think it captures and covers it all

Suggestions please! Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion, but (without looking to start a debate) i absolutely despise the new Trek movie. Hmmm, I guess i could consider an older movie. But i was thinking an episode.

Hmm, DS9 is my absolute fav series of any kind. But Trial and Tribble-ations is too much of a joke episode.

From DS9 i considered Duet, The Wire, The Visitor, and In the Pale Moonlight, Whispers,  to name a few. But all of these seem to require too much back knowledge to pick up and watch and enjoy as a first time watcher. I think Voyager is the same.

Seems i think TNG is the best way to go for first viewing. Also considering "Remember Me", "Cause and Effect" is pretty classic anomaly science stuff. "Starship Mine" is nice and simple. Chain of command part 2? but "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!" might be too much.

How about Broken Bow? It wasn't my favorite but it would be a way to start Trek from scratch.

How about City on the Edge of Forever, or the best ST movie of them all, TWOK? ¿TWOK worked for my nephew. ¿He loves the TOS characters now.

Or there's The Trouble with Tribbles, Arena, The Devil in the Dark, etc.

yes romatic moive ¿i don't think any trek is romatic ¿i am guy and single so what do i know

TOS was both sexy and romantic many times.

TNG and the others were too, occaisionally.

But TOS gets the win for sexy.

The OP said no Original Trek.

If I were showing a new person Trek I'd go with ones that require little to no backstory (or include the backstory) to appreciate such as:

DS9: House of Quark, Explorers, Little Green Men, Hard Time, One Little Ship.

Voyager: Someone to Watch Over Me, Scorpion, Thirty Days, Pathfinder.

Of course House of Quark and Little Green Men might be too alien nerdy if you think she wouldn't be up for it. But they're fun lite episodes.

It really depends what your girlfriend likes.

Duet is a good idea. It stands quite well on its own and as for background information there's nothing so complicated that you couldn't pick it up as you go.

Either of the Tribbles episodes would be good if your girlfriend likes comedy. Although a lot of the humour on Trials and Tribbleations does depend somewhat on back-knowledge and so I wouldn't go for that one first without having seen TWT. No originals... so yep. Not that, then.

But definitely agreed about Pale Moonlight -- a lot of that is about complex back and forth maneouvring in a war about which a first time viewer would of course know nothing.

Chain of Command Part Two: Not recommended without at least first seeing Part One. Although that said, it might be a little heavy for a first time episode.

Data's Day could be a good one depending on your gf's tastes in entertainment. Good for a laugh, good for a bit of drama -- and you don't really have to know anything beyond what you would already figure out. The only real bit of exposition you might need to give your girlfriend is "Data is an android." Much of the knowledge she would need for this would not be beyond her ability to guess, I think.

Also I think the characters and situations would appeal without having to pigeonhole the "girlfriend viewer" into some kind of two-bit stereotype.

The best choice of what to show really does depend on her tastes.
