"Gentlemen, if this is what you call enhancement, then you've got a gift for understatement."

- Riker

I forgot just how good this episode really is.  Watching "11001001" again last night I was really struck by how relaxed it is.  The dialogue is smartly written, there's good character interaction, there's a real sense of atmosphere in the holodeck scenes, and it's very well directed by Paul Lynch.  In fact, this whole episode is shot the way you would a movie.  Maybe people don't pay attention to these sorts of things but I do.  The way the camera pans around Riker as he plays the trombone is extraordinary.  The first shot of Minuet is unforgettable as it starts with her legs and works its way up to her face.  The cinematography is, once again, darker and more atmospheric than we're used to.  It's a very stylish and well made episode.

The story is also one of the first season's best.  The Bynars are one of the more interesting alien races we've seen so far.  I never really thought about it this way before but the Bynars are basically a more benign form of the Borg.  They're completely dependant on their main computer to the point where if it shuts down, they all die.  They don't behave as individuals, but in pairs or a collective.  They have numbers for identities (one-one, zero-zero, one-zero, zero-one).  When they make decisions, they're driven by equations instead of emotions.  They know how to maximize efficiency.  I really like the Bynars and it's a shame we never got to see them again or their homeworld.  Here's a scary thought:  are we becoming like the Bynars with our dependance on machines like computers and cell phones?  If the internet were to completely shut down, wouldn't we all be suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms?  I swear the internet is like a drug, sometimes.

Even though the threat in "11001001" is a benign one, there's still a lot of excitement and suspense.  A few strange glances between the Bynars early on suggest to the audience that they're either up to something or harboring some secret.  And when the ship is stolen and taken out of space dock, the episode really picks up speed.  This is the first time we get to see Picard and Riker activate the auto-destruct sequence.  I like how there's a little clock ticking down the remaining time left.

But this is really a Riker episode and Jonathan Frakes has stated that it's one of his favorites.  And why shouldn't it be?  He gets to play jazz in New Orleans and dance with Minuet.  Even though she's only a holodeck character, they clearly had chemistry together.

Of the episodes I've reviewed so far, I'd say this is the second best one.  I'm glad it held up well after all these years.  Like with "The Big Goodbye," the writing really carried the episode.  If only they could all be this well written.

My score:  4/5

I felt it was a good episode. It was interesting to see the Bynars as well. Minuet was perfect for Riker and it was interesting to see how she handled interacting with Captain Picard and Riker. I  was glad to see that Riker and Picard was working as a team to retake the Enterprise. Too bad when the adventure was over, Minuet was gone.

I liked this episode too. Minuet does appear again in "Future Imperfect".

I would be able to buy it if she reapeeared for Riker but then acted totally different or fake (like typical holocharacters do) , but they made the computer unable to re-create Minuet's physical template for the dumb masses.

I was also surprised by how good this one was. The Bynars were very clever, and overall it felt like an intelligent, mature episode. One of the first season's best, IMO.

I always thought she looks a bit like Janeway.

It's a great episode, not up there with Shades of Grey, but great.
