So I've been reading some online reviews about the game, debating whether to buy the game or not. The reviews I have read are not very good.

I love the idea of a ST online game, and I am a big fan of World of Warcraft.

Anyone here play the open beta who can give me some idea if it's worth buying?

The graphics just look ok to me. Not as good as the PS3 games that I have been playing.

If your looking for a star trek mmorpg that incorporates all of the star trek universe in an indepth and free to choose your path kind of way...then steer clear of it.

If your looking for a casual action based multiplayer star trek war game, then this is for you.

I would say a good 80% of the content (basing this of what i played in beta) is combat which can get a bit repetative if you play more than a few hours a week. there is some exploration/diplomacy/non-combat content, but imo it's a real let down, and i hope they fix this soon.

Worst thing about though imo, is it doesn't really feel that your playing an mmo and theres absolutley no on-lvling/non-pvping social content, which only leaves you grinding or pvping.

Yes, it is a decent game for what it is: An online war game set in Star Trek. It is addicting in its' own right, but not really a true Star Trek simulator. The Prime Directive is thrown out the door with this game and it turns into basically a "third person shooter" complete with zero death penalty and respawns a plenty. There is clearly LOTS of room for improvement and imagine the Devs will be constantly adding more content to bring it up to speed. Picture the game as a "new house" that is empty, but items to be added often to make it more homey are coming!

Still, with that said, it is still a fun game. Add in the Gamestop pre-order perk of the classic Constitution class ship, and the TOS uniforms from the Digital Deluxe Edition, and you can emulate playing in the TOS era.

The Unidine
Interesting choice, what do u think of that name for Species 8472?

What are the rules / costs of the game?

Paid monthly, annually, front hand than FoC all the way?

Or paid ST way, FoC even from the beginning (excluding purchase of the game itself)
:D

ST needs time to incorporate the non-combat aspecs of it.

Unlike most online games i know, ST got political issues, not just hack & slash everything u see with no meaning.
rather than seeing them as a race of a civilisation they're all just monsters.

Anyway, like DS9 during the war, exploration starts again after a while & in rare occasions.

Sorry, but i gotta disagree with you on that point. I think it would be very dumb to include missions with no combat. What would be the point? Even when you explore, you have to go into combat sometimes.

Like you said, "Sometimes"
as there won't always be combat everywhere, "every minute of every day, never sleeping."

Believe it or not, there are times where there isn't a soldier under a rock or two.

BTW, when I said non-combat aspecs, that does not mean a mission entirely no shooting.
Not sure how the game works yet, but if we can drop an away team on any planet we want outside mission parameters, than there's the time & place to have some boring walks

Anyway, non-combat aspecs does not mean there isn't any shooting in the vicinity.
Aspecs such as scanning something, gathering, exploring, discoveries, etc.

All these are non-combat intentions, but there may be people there to fight, if there's anyone there. If not, we won't be bothered.

It's like in Fallout 3, where we mind our own business doing things with our guns holstered, while NPCs near by shoot each other to death.

Now you hit on something cool. I think it would be cool to send crew members on away missions while doing combat in space. That way you can do defend missions.

Another idea would be sending away teams to crippled ships and then you can make a team of your own guys.

Im just saying, for me personally i find exploring missions kinda boring unless they were first contacts and even then you have to make them interesting like having to win races over by bringing them something guarded by klingons or fixing something for them.

My only worry is that they turn this game into something where you have to "Hug it out" every time.

On a related note, I played SWG and before it got lame (NGE) they had a rich assortment of missions that mixed exploration with bits of combat. In addition to this, they also had a really awesome crafting system and economy that was fun. THere were whole swaths of the community of SWG that didn't even participate in combat becauase there was so much to do. It was a good mix. This is something i find is lacking about STO. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, hope they would introduce a crafting system into the game. That's what i'm hoping they will eventually do with all the anomalies out there that are currently next to useless.

That being said, im not totally against exploration missions as long as im not just playing hide and seek. (which already happens in the clusters)

This game looks fun but right now I cannot afford to play. I like to see the away missions and crew customizations because I am not very interested in large space battles and coordinated ship maneuvers.

I think this game has something for everyone. For the maniacs that love to blow a good few klingons out into the void of space (myself included) you have all the battles. And for the scientists you can explore the galaxy and go on the away missions and meet strange exotic aliens... oooooo the excitment of it all. This game cater's for all!!!

Hi guys,

I haven't played the game yet, and doubt I ever will. I'm the biggest Star Trek fan, much like everyone on here! ¿and I also love online games, been playing Guild Wars since it came out.

Anyway, after watching the youtube clips of StarTrek Online and reading hundreds of reviews, I've decided not to attempt it. It just isn't Star Trek to me, not the way I know it. If you ask me, EVE Online does a better job of bringing to life what I imagine the ideal Star Trek Online to be like. The only issue is that Eve Online ISN'T Star Trek! If only it was, and they changed a few things here and there, ie, ships, stations, races... then we'd have the perfect game (for me :))
