Why didn't the Gary Seven TV show happen?

Assignment: Earth is a pretty darn fun episode, so I'm curious, why didn't this particular spin-off get the green light? Was it because of falling ratings for TOS? Did the studio not like the idea? Was it going to be called Assingment: Earth? Do we know what direction the show would take? Would the episodes have been standalones, or would Gary Seven have a "mission"? Kirk's was "To seek out new life, and new civilisations", would Gary Seven's have been "To ensure 20th century Earth survives, so that the Starfleet/UFP will happen"?

Here is some info from Memory Alpha that would shed some light on the subject:

Spinoff

   * This episode was designed partly as a pilot for a new series featuring Gary Seven and his mission. "Star Trek" was teetering on the brink of cancellation late in its second year, and Roddenberry hoped to get a new show going for the fall season. The first draft pilot script (14 November 1966) had no mention of Star Trek or its characters. [1]
   * Assignment: Earth did not enter production as a television series, but was revisited by John Byrne in a comic book series from IDW Publishing, Star Trek: Assignment: Earth.
   * The plot concept of beneficial aliens secretively helping earthlings, as opposed to the much more common "villain aliens" scenarios, was later resurrected by Roddenberry for his movie The Questor Tapes.

It'd be interesting to see how ST as a franchise would have panned out had this gone ahead. Would we ever even have had Next Gen?

Good question. To be honest, I do not know.

We'll have to invade the Mirror Unoiverse then!

If Gary Seven had gone ahead, maybe Gene would have revisited the future at some point. It may have taken place in the 23rd/24th Century, but would it have been the Next Gen we know and love?

I can't really explain why, but my gut says no.

I'd have been interested to see the Gary Seven spinoff because I really enjoyed Assignment: Earth, and I got the impression that there was a lot more going on with his character than what we found out (like what's the deal with his catwoman, lol)

One thing is for sure, without the success of (sorry 4Lights  ) Star Wars, there would have probably been no TMP and without that, probably no Next Gen.

But definitely count me in as one of those folks who would have loved to have seen a Gary Seven Series. You are quite right Mrs S. here was a heck of a lot going on that would have been excellent if expanded...oh what could have been.

I remember someone a few months ago posted a thread saying how alike Gary Seven and the Doctor from Doctor Who were.

A highly intelligent man, a pretty yet fiesty woman by his side, and an animal who is not what they first appear to be.

Which ones which?

Because it was really bad.  They did redo the concept of that show in the late 90's early 00's I think.  It was called Assignment Earth but it had the companions rather than futuristic humans with cats.
