I don't know if that was the intent from the start, but it certainly worked well that they were able to do that with him.

Well, that's what series creator Michael Piller said in the Season 2 DVD extras.

I figured I'd take him at his word.

Hm. Ok.

Well... They're both doctors in Starfleet. They're both passionately dedicated to their profession etc. And they both had their chance to snog a Trill...

While I like Doctor Crusher as a character, I probably wouldn't even be as much into Star Trek if it weren't for Bashir. Not the most awesome intro scene in Emissary although seeing him stick his foot in his mouth with Kira was worth a chuckle.

But the extent to which he developed as a character over the seven years -- from that kind of wide eyed pup to a savvy, almost world-weary youngish man who nonetheless managed to maintain his integrity and sense of fun.

And that, friendlings, is why he is my favourite character in all of Trek and certainly one of my fav. characters in anything... if not the most favourite.

As mentioned before... While Crusher was all right, she started off just the way she was and wasn't really challenged in the same way as Bashir -- and therefore didn't really change. I guess a part of that was that she was also very much a minor-main character (possibly in the same way that Worf seemed to be on TNG.)

No competition, really. My vote's with Julian.

I didn't choose Dr. McCoy because he was so darn dramatic. The Doctor I didn't choose because I didn't see that show. And ENT I don't even know about their doctor. So I chose Bashir and Crusher.

Couldn't have said it any better.  Right on the money OtakuJo.

You should watch Voyager. It has it's problems but The Doctor is probably the best character on the show followed closely by Tuvok.

Tuvok?  I was always partial to Paris as the second best character...  then a huge drop off.

Actually, Paris is pretty much the only character I like on VOY.

It is interesting we are asking this question on a DS9 board. Biased perhaps?

Maybe someone could go make a thread in the TNG forum. But there have been many polls including each doctor from each series. McCoy usually takes the lead followed by Bashir/The Doctor, Phlox/Crusher are somewhere in between and Pulaski on the bottom.

Of course I'm voting for Bashir! He's my favorite. But I must say that I do like Dr. Crusher.

Soooo...let me just say that it all boils down to the writing on TNG as compared to DS9. We all know that DS9 did a far superior job in taking every character, including several supporting characters, in making them evolve from season to season. TNG only really focused on the evolution of Picard and Data...no one else. So poor Gates McFadden only really got 5 or 6 episodes throughout the whole series that focused on Crusher. I really enjoyed "Remember Me," "Attached," and "Cause And Effect". But while those episodes focused on her character, and even though she gave outstanding performances in them, there was no evolution. She remained the same, dedicated professional Doctor from "Farpoint" to "All Good Things".

Also, DS9 had the good fortune of being more like a soap opera in as much as the continuing storylines, making the evolution of each character easy to write. Of course, TNG didn't have that. Each problem was solved by the end of the episode.

Gates was great, Sid was great, but unfortunately it's all about the writing. And Dr. Julian Bashir was fleshed out perfectly in those 7 years.

BASHIR. He had promise of being a great, doctor and I put him up there with Dr. Phlox from Enterprise and Dr. McCoy from TOS.

I'd have to say I agree with Kuka009. The episodes involving Doctor Crusher were generally solid episodes and well written although really they did very little to develop her character. And let's face it -- while I like a lot of the episodes that focus on Beverly they really do pale in comparison to many of the ones with Julian.
