The original ST wasn't really about different species working together. The Enterprise was all human except for Spock and he was half human. Most of the aliens they met (unless they looked like Earth people) were trouble. And come to think about it, nearly every show, either had a racial joke about Spock's heritage or some kind of sexual thing about women. Kirk either leering at or making some sexual comment.

Some people see a glass that's half empty.
Others see a glass that's half full.
I see a glass that's twice as big as it really needs to be.

That's what made Trek so powerful... it advocated thinking outside the box. Yes, it was embarrassingly sexist. Yes, there was an ugliness to the teasing visited on Spock. But yes also, Spock shrugged it off, and so did Uhura and Rand. All three were weekly role models for people who had to work a little harder in order to prove they were just as good as the anointed ones. And none of them were bitter about it. Heck, Uhura shamed Abraham Lincoln with her complete lack of concern about being called a negress.

It was the mission of the TOS crew to find new friends.

Adversaries fell into several broad categories... super aliens with a lesson to teach, well-meaning near-equals open to clearing up misunderstandings, competitive near-equals who could still be made to see the value of making an ally out of a presumed enemy, and adversaries that just couldn't be reasoned with.

Against these adversaries, what led the TOS crew to success nearly every time was that one of the crew had an ah-hah moment before the others did. Because that person had a skill set or an upbringing or a biology different from the others, he/she realized some crucial truth while the others were still blind to it. For examples, ...

Where No Man Has Gone Before - Kirk doesn't want to see where Gary is headed. Spock can see.
The Corbomite Maneuver - Spock can't see beyond the logic of chess. Kirk sees poker.
The Naked Time - Scotty figures out a way not to blow up the ship on engine start.
Balance of Terror - Tag-team effort with Kirk choreographing.
The Galileo Seven - McCoy knows it'll take more than logic to get them out of this.
Court Martial - Kirk's lawyer is the first to see that Finney is not dead.
Shore Leave - Spock is first to see what's really going on.
Arena - Kirk on his own finally sees what's really behind the Gorn attack.
The Devil in the Dark - Spock is first to see what's really going on.
Catspaw - Spock sees right through illusions meant to confuse the emotional.
Amok Time - McCoy sees a way to save Kirk by letting him get killed.
The Doomsday Machine - Scotty is first to see the need for phasers on Constellation.
The Trouble with Tribbles - The tribbles are the first to see the Klingon agent.
Bread & Circuses - Uhura is first to see what worshiping the son means.
Journey to Babel - The Andorian ambassador sees the attacker's true motivation.
A Private Little War - McCoy sees that pacifists will be the first to die.
The Immunity Syndrome - McCoy helps Kirk see the solution (antibodies).
Spectre 0f the Gun - Spock sees that belief in imaginary bullets can kill.
Day of the Dove - Spock shows Kirk shows Kang what's really going on.
That Which Survives - Scotty and Spock tag-team to halt the runaway warp drive.

Brilliant to include that scene, and give it that turn. Ahead of its time.

Great response, IVH. I enjoyed the examples. And it reminded me the TOS crew was a bit more team-oriented than I recalled and gave it credit for.

While watching the moon landing with man great grandfather... "What's the big deal Captain Kirk does this every day." ?(I was half kidding) My Great grand father was bored and turned the channel. ?I was fascinated... what was it 1972 the second time we went? ? I was 6? I was a born trekkie...

holy cow, me, too! I was four in July '69 and remember my dad so excited about the moon landing that he was taping the TV with a home movie camera. I asked my brother what the big deal with, and he had the darndest time convincing me this really WAS the FIRST moon landing. I was convinced we'd been to Mars, Jupiter AND Federation planets.

so great story QDQ. sorry I had the same one... :)

It shows how much we loved Star Trek...   :)

Here's what I've been able to compile from the three threads. Where there is a question mark after the birth year, the member only gave their age. If it was before June I added a year. If it was after June I used the year they gave their age. If there are any specific varifications, let me know :) ¿There ¿also appears to by a lot of folks missing. No prodding, just don't want to miss anyone.

Wow, I'm in the top, whatever--oldest crew, too.

Yup. Nice work.
