Now look, James Kirk is my all-time greatest hero. I love the guy.

But, I've noticed in re-watching the series that he can be something of an arrogant pr!c% sometimes.

Has anyone else ever noticed how he interacts with random crewmembers at times? I've always thought it was kind of stuck-up or self-important the way he deals with them. He rarely, if ever, looks at a random crewman in the eye when he talks to them...and when he does, he seems almost annoyed that he has to acknowledge them. He does it to the "redshirts" mostly, usually when they have some throwaway lines in an episode like "What now, Captain?" or whatever. He usually just brushes them aside like they are a nuisance.

Has anyone else ever noticed this?? I've noticed it a lot as I've been re-watching the bluray disks I own.

He's not there to be friends with the crew, he's the Captain and he needs them to do what he says. :logical:

I suggest you re-watch your DVDs, there's only one female crew-member whom Kirk ever pays any romantic energy on and that's Marlena Moreau. And 80-90% of the 'Dames of the Week' he either is NOT involved with or he is only kissing in the line of duty.

Spock addresses this in The Enemy Within. I can't remember the exact quote, but he talks of how the crew can not know about the 'bad' Kirk, because they need a Captain they can look up to and admire and respect.

So yes, I agree with Captbates here. And this is also something that Janeway sometimes seems to worry about...that a Captain should not become 'friends' with their crew. They are meant to be above the crew, they are meant to be superior to everyone else...that's why they are the Captain ;)

As for Spock and Bones (and Scotty to a certain extent)...well they're not really regular crewmembers are they. Plus, they often end up in the Captain's chair themselves, so in a way the crew needs to see them more 'on the same level' as the Captain.

This would be the quote you are after:
SPOCK: How shall we explain it to them, Captain? The search parties are to capture you?
KIRK: Tell them.
SPOCK: The search parties, Captain.
KIRK: Yes, I'll make an announcement to the entire crew, tell them what happened. It's a good crew. They deserve to know.
SPOCK: Captain, no disrespect intended, but you must surely realise you can't announce the full truth to the crew. You're the Captain of this ship. You haven't the right to be vulnerable in the eyes of the crew. You can't afford the luxury of being anything less than perfect. If you do, they lose faith, and you lose command.
KIRK: Yes, I do know that, Mister Spock. What I don't know is why I forgot that just now. Mister Spock, if you see me slipping again, your orders, your orders are to tell me.
SPOCK: Understood, Captain.
