Did the TV network catch on or object to Data's relations with Tasha Yar? Something about it being "morally wrong" or "repulsive" or "too bold"? I know TOS hinted at relationships between androids and humans, but this episode was much more explicit. Also, there are dead, naked people on Tsiolkovsky , suggesting some kind of an orgy.

TNG didnt really have to worry much about Networks since the show was syndicated.

But somebody had to approve of it or not.

There were episodes of TNG that were censored or banned, TNG was a "bold" show at the time. It's not as though we hadn't seen relationships between humans and androids before (outside Trek) Bladerunner comes to mind, but there's many more, and Sci-fi shows can do episodes that, say, a soap "based on reality" could never do.
There was a WTF moment, surrounded by comedy when it happened.

Just my two cents, I know it doesn't really answer your question. :)

Yes, Gene Rodenneberry and his production team.

Yeah, I thought of Bladerunner when I wrote that question. Must see it again!

I believe there were (implied) naked people in the original TOS "The Naked Time" also...

:logical:

Rightly so. But to actually show them... that could not get past the network people. Of course the show was syndicated so it doesn't matter.

Even though I am a fan of TNG this was a crappy episode. Isn't this the one where fans started saying TNG was just becoming TOS redo?

It was only the 2nd episode of TNG and was done to mirror the TOS episode by intent.

It was a good way to mention Kirk.

Yes this is very true. I have mixed feelings with this episode but I like the reference for the Original Series. I did not like the fully functional part but at least it is a good joke for some fans. There is much wrong with this episode but it is like a romp.

Exactly...and what better way to really show off the new characters in the first "regular" episode than to infect them with the Psi 2000 Virus?

We learned more about the "new" TNG cast in that one episode than we would have in 5 other normal episodes.

:logical:

One thing I liked about the episode was the crew refering to the old Enterprise. Picard didn't seem too excited about mentioning Kirk as he did in Generations. :D

Yeah... I thought TNG Starfleet officers would have worshipped Kirk or just talked about him more. They do respect Spock, however.

Yep, while Kirk boldly went, Picard baldly went.
