Thanks Narada :)

Just to support my argument a little further, from wiki:

:)

Yes this is all very true. I forget but did you once mention experience with literature? You have good information for this subject and I remember you making literary comparisons in the past.

On the subject of the monomyth I believe the Abrams team also wished to make the new Star Trek movie in this way. And so it can be considered a monomyth just like Star Wars. There are also other literary references they used as we discuss in other threads like Captain Nemo. In this way they are using archetypes and symbols within the story. It is true they also appreciate other elements of Star Wars but I still believe it is Star Trek to the core. Not everyone will agree but this is fine.

Well, I read a lot

I've also done a couple of classes in scriptwriting, which is where I learned all about the monomyth.

And I'm a (very amateur) writer too ;)

Yes, and I mentioned this in the other thread about comparing STXI to Star Wars, that I don't agree that they took the storyline from Star Wars...because Star Wars took the story from the monomyth in the first place.

The only comparisons that I really make between STXI and Star Wars are visual ones.

Yes in a way I agree there are visual similarities to Star Wars but I also believe there are even more visual similarities with Star Trek. This is not only because ILM did the special effects but also for other reasons such as making the larger scope andthe fast pace of directed action. They also use more realism or what is called the "used universe" approach. I think they also discuss this topic in the special features from the dvd.

And so even if we see similarities to Star Wars I also see similarities to previous Star Trek. Like in the action scene on the drilling platform this reminds me of an original series fist fight. Sulu has these swash buckling characteristics which are seen in the original series and movies. There are so many examples of good references that I cannot mention them all in one post.

I also agree they did not rip off the story of Star Wars because both movies use the monomyth as a guide line.
