What is the origin of the name Noonien?

As in Noonien Soong or Khan Noonien Singh...

Judging by the name, I expected Dr. Soong to be, well, an  Asian guy. Khan was Asian...

But then it turned out that Data was built in his maker's image, which was cute and convenient... but on top of everything, young Dr. Soong had blue eyes and reddish hair (he did look good, btw) .... whereas Brent apparently has brown eyes (see my post about Eyecolor). It was just a bit odd, in my opinion. Dr Soong looked like nothing like I imagined him.

It came from a friend of Roddenberry's during WWII named Kim Noonien Singh.

dr soong is just brent spiner without data/lore makeup....when brent was real young.

the name (Khan) Noonien Singh/ (Dr.) Noonien ''Soong'' was a call to re-establish contact with an old friend Kim Noonien Singh to see if he was still alive. (he went MIA possible KIA in the war)

sadly though...nothing came of it....
