Poll question: Aside from Star Trek, what's your pick for best sci-fi or fantasy movie of 2009?

Haven't seen Avatar yet, so it has to be Terminator.

I would choose Battle For Terra as the best.

Planet 51 and Avatar are close, though.

I was torn between Avatar and District 9...but went with District 9 in the end because of its more 'indie' feel.

And I know that it wasn't really an indie film, but compared to Avatar, which was the most expensive movie ever made, and had ten years of build up to precede it, as well as a raft of famous stars to attract the crowds, and The King of the World to direct it...District 9 kind of slipped in through the back door, on a much smaller budget, an improvised script, filmed entirely on digital (which always goes down well with me being a fan of the digital medium myself) and NO famous faces in it...and yet it managed to impress me just as much as Avatar did.

I haven't seen Avatar yet, but from what I've read about it, the critical consensus seems to be "incredible effects, thin plot." Still, I'd like to see it, if only because it seems to be the "event" film of the holiday season. My vote for best SF/fantasy film of '09 (besides you-know-what), goes to District 9, with an honorable mention for Moon.

I say 'AVATAR' because I never saw such a great movie before.

I wouldn't call Avatar's plot thin. I think it has a decent storyline, is well acted, and yes, it is visually gorgeous.

Since I'm not able to pick "Star Trek XI" in this poll, I've chosen "Avatar"...it was awsome.....

I went with District 9 though my favorite movie of the year was UP.

I was impressed with what District 9 did with the budget, & the no-nonsense intelligent treatment.

Haven't seen Avatar; I'll buy that it's gorgeous, slightly thin plot but still decent--does have a good cast, doesn't it?

It was kind of a big year for movies, wasn't it?
