Jerry Goldsmith was an excellent composer, and just about every one of his scores is terrific -- he's got a resume dating back to the Sixties at least, and even though his music is generally classical, he frequently livens things up with more experimental or otherworldly sounds. His score for TMP is perfect.

James Horner is a talented composer, and I've got the Wrath of Khan soundtrack on CD somewhere, but he's not quite as versatile. His score for Wrath of Khan seemed to get chopped up and reused in Willow, Aliens, and even Avatar! While I like the WOK music, I don't think it quite reaches the depths of any of Goldsmith's scores.

I'm in no way married to the TOS theme (born too late I suppose)

Though I will never forget the first time I heard the theme to Braveheart or Field of Dreams...

I love these guys.

The music is beautiful!

I know I left off Alexander Courage, and Giacchino... Ron Jones, Dennis McCarthy and others.. but for me, these two fellas sum up what Star Trek music is supposed to be.

Between the two, who is your favorite, and why?

And please feel free to discuss the other composers as well.

Don't forget about Michael Giacchino's great music in the new movie. Especially the track called "Enterprising Young Men." I hope he wins an Oscar for it.

LOL did you read the part about "I know I left off Alexander Courage, and Giacchino.." ??

I wanted to focus on the OS movies and their major composers but didn't want to limit the conversation to only them.. which lead to my final statement....

;)

And I have the XI soundtrack and listen to it often.

Sorry I didn't. I tend to skim threw posts.

I LOVE the ST II and III scores, so I'm going to have side with Horner.

(Side note, while I love Giacchino's scores in everything I heard including Star Trek,  but I can't stand the main tune for the film, for I love everything surrounding it except for those main notes, IMO the worst music I've ever heard)

Jerry. No contest.

And just generally speaking, Jerry has given us some great themes down through the years:

Gremlins
Poltergeist
Pappillion
The Mummy

I could go on, but his genius speaks for it's self.
