The story goes that the producers didn't want to renew Garrett Wang's contract (allegedly due to laziness, frequent tardiness, etc.)

Those plans were stymied when Wang appeared on a list of most beautiful people. However, the series had a large cast of main characters and the producers wanted to get rid of one of them to make room for Seven of Nine. Rightly or wrongly, they chose to keep Garrett Wang for the added publicity and let Jennifer Lien finish out her contract.

Now that's interesting.

What's Wang done lately? Serves him right. Everyone should take Star Trek seriously. ¿

Wang did a fan made Star Trek effort a couple of years ago. He also provided his voice for a Voyager video game and maybe one or two movies since the show ended.

I can't help but think, now, that his own behavior may have been part of why he wasn't utilised as much as he was.

Or perhaps his behavior was the result of him feeling his character was a waste.

I feel we could have done with out nelix cuz he was an insufferable shithead

From what I've heard, Lien did not know that she was going to be fired until the episode The Gift.

She wasn't really fired. Her contract simply wasn't renewed.

there's been lots of speculation as to why jennifer lien was let go versus garrett wang.  the accepted conclusion has usually been that GW was the one that was going to be let go until the "most beautiful people" people magazine issue came out and GW was on the list, as stated earlier by the founder.  it was indeed b/c of his unprofessionalism of being tardy (or whatever) to the set. he was actually suspended over this during the production of "blood fever."

the whole cast was given an initial three year contract. when it came time for the cast to sign another three year contract, robert beltran almost didn't renew b/c he didn't like the direction of the storyline.  the producers promised him things would be different and he decided to sign.

IMO, i think GW was going to be let go and TPTB were also looking at taking kes' character in a different, possibly sinister, direction starting with "the warlord" episode.  but, with the combination of JL not being very convincing in that type of role and GW's inclusion on a stupid list, the producers decided to switch tactics and let JL go instead.  that's why you have harry almost dying in "the scorpion" and then the next episode kes being hastily rushed off the ship.  as for people who say it was always going to be kes let go b/c of the promo photos, those are taken during the off-season so they had time to make-up/switch their decision as to who was going to be let go before the photos are taken.

no other character was under consideration to being let go, even if one of the actors wanted out as was the case with robert beltran.

What aspect of the story line did Beltran have a problem with?

if i remember correctly, his character wasn't being used enough and the show wasn't character-based enough.  not being a sci-fi fan he got tired of remembering his lines b/c there was too much "technobabble" for his taste.

there are also conflicting stories that at first he tried to give the writers and producers ideas for his character and was blown off.  so he stopped caring and trying. other accounts, including beltran, himself say that he didn't believe it was his job as an actor to give ideas to the writers and producers. he was there to recite and act out what was on paper.

what's wrong with Neelix, I actually enjoyed his character for the most part, he kind of reminded me of a Newman type character who was more optimistic than sardonic as Newman was.

That's not how she tells it.
According to her interview in "Star Trek: The Magazine", it was a mutual decision.  They also let her go because they fell they had written Kes into a corner and had no interest in continuing to write for her.

Neelix stayed because the character had more potential and a more solid fanbase of the older women demographic.

:O That's the first time I ever heard that. I consider myself an "older" woman right now and I wouldn't consider myself a fan. Now Chakotay on the other hand...

You should go to conventions.

Whenever Ethan Philips shows up, he's got a big turn out of older women that are part of the "We Love Neelix" fan club. ?They go nuts over him!!! ?You'd think he was a Beatle or something. ?

On a side note, the make up and detail that when into creating Neelix is awesome. ¿He'd make a great Halloween costume.  He's got to be the most complex make up jobs for any regular character we've seen to date.
