Uh, hello, didn't you see the movie or watch the special on Syfy channel?

Yes, I saw Star Trek XI, but I don't recall any special on syfy.

Sorry for the ambiguity, I was referring to the movie "2012" and a ridiculous special on Syfy channel about the Mayan calendar. Basically, it will be the end of the world. No big deal.

Why are Trek fans getting the hit on this?
I would hazard a guess that most people downloading are NOT Trek fans, they are people that didnt want to take a chance at paying 10 for that goofy forehead alien movie.

Hell, how many people here say that they have seen it multiple times vs how many people that say that they downloaded? There, like, two people TOTAL here that said they have downloaded vs everyone else that paid for it.

They are afraid to admit to downloading because the MPAA gestapo might get their IP address and come a knockin' at their door.
As for the old school Trek fans that suffered through all the silly putty foreheaders, they are not the pirates, most likely it's the Chinese and Russian gangsters.

Oh. Do you believe the world is going to end in December 2012?

I don't know if it will be in December of 2012, but the signs are very clear that something is coming.

Ohh ! What very clear signs?

It's all over the "internet" and in the "news." World government, liberals taking over everything, high taxes, guvment health care, Rush's chest pains, and Robert Byrd still in the Senate.

Wow, that's rich.

As for RL, it's too bad that traitorous piece of feces didn't just go on and clock out.

It has been a pleasure.

Something of note in the article was that Paramount or CBS was getting the IP address's of people who downloaded off of sites like bittorrent with the intent to take some form of legal action against them.

Yikes!  That is scary.  The penalties if caught are indeed severe.  They are out of proportion to the crime, but it is used to make examples out of the scofflaws.

Downloaders, be afraid, very afraid.

I take your point.  My poll was poorly worded and I should not have blamed ST fans.  It is most probably the curious or repeat downloaders who have done this, even though some on this thread do admit to downloading.

Well it didn't hold anything back I don't think.  It still managed the sales that it did.  So maybe a lot of those people were prompted to get it after all (those could be worldwide downloads.)

Star Trek fans (and others) are downloading and purchasing and that's that.

It's very unlikely most are doing both.

The whole game kinda changed on that front when the FCC ¿said it was legal to record broadcast over the air waves...

Though you can only keep the copies for 7 days after which you're breaking the law. Almost everyone has broken that one.

That is not that. ¿The math doesn't support your conclusion.
XI has sold about 6 million DVDs, so compared with 11 million downloads it is obvious that more people are getting illegal copes than are getting legal copies. ¿If people were just downloading "early" and then buying a proper copy 11 million should have been purchased. ¿And that does not count all the bootleg DVDs that were purchased, or given free as in your case.

Imagine how many would have sold if there were no ways to get a copy other than legally. ¿No wonder studios are upset by this.

Nor does it include streaming. If more than 1% of the illegal viewers bought a copy of the DVD or blu-ray I'll be properly shocked.

I voted 'other' - I suspect that a lot of this is strictly 'because we can', or 'impatience' type stuff.  Let's say half of those buying DVD's did at least one illegal transfer prior - that's a little over 1/4 of your 11 million right there...  I also question whether those downloading would actually buy it if they had no alternative.  I suppose a lot would, but a lot wouldn't.

Then again, with 11 million, even if only 16.1051% did buy it, it would add up to 1,771,561 additional sales - that's significant, no matter how you slice it.  :logical:
