...really it's as bland as Voyager. The more dramatic and serialized elements get such a half-assed treatment that they fall flat.

Okay, so there's more serialization than on TNG, and the characterization might be deeper. That doesn't make it a better show. Compared to other serialized sf shows with complex characters and developed story arcs, DS9 seems like amateur hour.

Other serialized science fiction series such as...?

Such as...

Babylon 5, which aired at the same time as DS9 but actually told a coherent story instead of asking "Hey, remember the Dominion?" every fifth episode.

Battlestar Galactica, which is genuinely character-driven and so dark that DS9 is light and sunny by comparison.

just finished season 7. i don't think it was as good as season 6 but on par with 5. the dukat/winn storyline was quite unique. i also liked the treatment of dax's relationships and i thought they worked it out nicely. i liked the odo/kira relationship and i wish it had been able to end differently but i think odo did what he thought was best for him and his people. i thought the klingon storyline was entertaining and i liked that martok ended up in charge. i also liked how sisko ended up. vic fontaine was a very unique element and quite entertaining.

jake was somewhat forgotten. there wasn't much development with o'brien. nog was somewhat interesting.

the cardassian/dominion story worked out well and i'm glad garack was kept at the forefront.

i had hoped for more section 31 development but, what happened was fascinating in my book. the lure was very powerful to me and i didn't get nearly as much as i thought the situation warranted.

for me, "The Siege of AR-558" and "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" were highlights.

when the last 9 episodes launched into serial mode, i thought there were a couple of instances where the show treaded very close to soap opera territory. in the end, it was a welcome addition to the st family. i thought the writing was solid and the storylines wrapped up satisfactorily.

my overall impression is that ds9 is the weakest of the trek family although, the last 3 seasons closed the gap tremendously. had ds9 started at the 3rd or 4th season, i would put it on par with the rest. season 6 was tremendous. equal with the very best of trek.

i'm incredibly disappointed that kurn and alexander disappeared.

i still think that the biggest oversight of the show was odo. he could have ended up with the mantle of most-interesting-being-in-the-quadrant a la data. his character had the most potential yet, went mostly underutilized and was a background player until the last couple of seasons. along those same lines, the writers missed a tremendous opportunity to keep the captured jem'hadar child on board. even better, they could have made him a ward of odo. watching odo struggle with his own identity while trying to help someone else with their identity issues would have been great storytelling.

dukat was a wonderful, unique, creative villain.

i liked the perspective of life-in-the-neighborhood. the original and most common charter of trek was a new alien each week. ds9 clearly deviated from that but, still delivered a very entertaining edition of sci-fi and a worthy addition to the trek family. despite the first couple of seasons, i'm glad i watched it and there are several episodes i would watch multiple times.

After the end of the Shadow War, Babylon 5 wandered aimlessly ... for a few more seasons, several made-for-TV movies, and a failed spinoff. So I'd have to disagree with your assessment there.

As for BSG? Well, (DS9 and BSG) executive producer Ron Moore has gone on record saying DS9 is what led him to the place where he could head up BSG. Therefore, yeah, BSG is obviously superior to DS9. It's also a LOT more recent.

Before DS9, there really wasn't too much serialized science fiction on television, especially with that level of characterization and quality production.

Bfniii?

I agree almost wholeheartedly with your two most recent posts (although I can't bring myself to get on board with the "Odo as Data" or "happy Jem'Hadar on our side" scenarios).

Therefore, it's a shame - especially after praising the series like you did - that you would rank DS9 last. Not sure I understand what makes TNG, VOY, and ENT better in your opinion.

*scratching head*

Regardless, it's always nice to see another Trek fan finally give DS9 a shot.

I didn't care much for DS9 when it was originally on tv, but I've decided to give it another shot (in the past year I've rewatched all of TOS and TNG after not seeing them in many, many years). I just finished S4 of DS9. I like it more than I remember, but I still think it's weaker than other ST (though IMHO, VOY is the weakest). As far as space station based shows, I find B5 much more interesting. I also think the acting is not as strong as other Trek shows (ENT probably having the best actors and character/relationship development).

I will continue to watch the rest of the series. There are characters that I like - Garak, Odo, Quark, O'Brien, Dukat, Worf. Different tastes make the world more interesting right? So, please don't get on my case or get nasty because I don't like DS9 as much as you do. If it's your favorite ST, I understand that. My favorite is Enterprise and not everyone likes it as much as I do. To each his/her own.

BTW, I think one of my favorite DS9 episodes so far is The Visitor. :D

I'd hate to consider myself an "aggressive" fan, but I'm afraid that's how I come across much of the time.

So I'll just say "hey, I get you." I mean, I didn't become any kind of superfan of the show until the final episode of Season Five. Ha.

But once I'd gone through the first six or seven episodes of Season Six? I recall looking back at the show overall and thinking to myself, "Geez, this thing has been really good all along."

I'm not the first to say this - and I won't be the last - but DS9 is like a really fun rollercoaster ride that just gets better and better as it races along the track.

My guess is even if you don't become a huge fan of DS9, you'll, at the very least, have to admit it featured the best characterization and most amibitious plotlines of any Trek series. In fact, I'd put money on it.

For me DS9 is the best Star Trek series. It was far more gripping than TNG and VOY, plus I liked the darker side to DS9. DS9 didn't have those happy endings or trivial stories, virtually every episode contributed to the general story. Whereas TNG and VOY had no general story: it was off to some star system, discover something nasty, sort everything out and then everything was all right. I feel that format is to... hollow.
