I couldn't help thinking after watching The Neutral Zone episode. The Romulan commander told Picard to silence his dog, referring to Worf.
Were there previous Trek episodes mentioning anything about Romulans visiting earth? If not, how could the commander know what a dog is without ever seeing one. How could a Romulan commander be so familar with a human figure of speech?

Or he could have said the Romulan term for something similar, and the universal translator used dog instead.

In Romulan, the word "dog" translates roughly as "Klingon officer serving on the bridge of a Starfleet ship with only vaguely-defined duties". The Romulan commander lucked out, because otherwise he would never have had an opportunity to use such an obscure term.

Dont forget Troi's words. She said that Romulans seemed fanicnated with Humans. That alone should answer your questions. Theres also a good cance the Romulan wasnt speaking english and the universal translater was in play/

The Alpha Quadrant aliens are very homogenized, they've known one another for years. At the third Khitomer Accords, the various races voted to only use late 20th century, western Earth dialect. That's why a Romulan can easily use the word "dog", or switch it up and say "Romulan dog". Same way a Romulan can say "ale", or "Romulan ale". It's just easier.
