Trek isn't just for the fans, Trek was made to be enjoyed by everybody. ¿I think JJ retaylored it to do just that.

Frankly, I'm happy that Trek is still around for my kids to enjoy regardless of whatever changes it goes thru. ?I think that's the big picture here.

Now this I agree with!

And whatever complaints I have with the new film in hindsight, I can't forget that on my first viewing it was entertaining and interesting enough to make me want to continue on my Trek voyage...and I'm not the only one who's been brought into the franchise by it.

So for that reason alone I have to give STXI a big thumbs up!

...doesn't mean I don't like to nitpick all the bits I don't like any more though...but then I'm a Brit...complaining is a national passtime

Haha, I'm glad I'm not alone! It's so quintessentially British... :D

If you don't mind me enquiring, MrsStarbuck - ignoring comparison with previous Trek, did you enjoy STXI overall as a film?

Oh no, I'm so sad that they are being mean to me, waaaaaa!

There have you been validated enough now!?

You people want to talk about not contributing to conversations, take a long hard look at yourselves. All you ever seem to do is come into these threads and jump on people for not seeing things your way.

My advice, why don't you get over the fact that not everyone like this movie, & stop resorting to "but we're the majority" as an arguemnt. It's simply not provable, and makes you look weak.

All that just to make yourself feel better that this was actually a good movie despite what you personally think of it.

I'll take a long hard look. Ok... I see a tiny minority of people trying desperately to convince themselves that they are being persecuted when in fact it boils down to sour grapes. You dont like it. We get it. Move on and don't wonder and scratch your head why you get so much flack when it's you swimming against the current.

ha ha...yay for good old British moaning!

In all honesty I thoroughly enjoyed STXI when I saw it at the cinema. However, I had not really seen any other Trek prior to seeing it (apart from a little TNG many years ago).

After I had seen the film I went out and bought all the TOS boxsets and watched all of them, followed by most of the films, and it's only now that I've seen TOS after I saw STXI that I find I greatly prefer the versions of Kirk and Co. in TOS.

Now I've said this many times before, all over this board, but I really do think that a lot of it is simply because I'm only now seeing the TOS-era stuff for the first time that I can not help compare and contrast it to STXI. Had I already known all about TOS, and been prepared for STXI being a departure from it going in, I don't think I'd have cared one bit how different it is.

So yes, to answer your question Vorta...all comparisons aside, I found STXI incredibly entertaining with great action scenes, some fantastic performances and a thoroughly gripping story.
However, even on my first viewing I found Kirk annoying and Nero lame...and that has not changed yet.

The ship was brand new, Sulu was still getting used to it, sure he should have known better, but hey, nobodys perfect. Most of the cinema I was in had a good laugh when this happened, why not just accept that they wanted to find a way to delay the Enterprise's arrival at Vulcan to stop it being destroyed with the rest of the fleet.

{quote]I also have a very difficult time excepting the idea that the death of George Kirk would be such a focal point in time that Checkov, Sulu, Uhura, and McCoy, would all enter the acadamy at the same time and that with the exception of McCoy they are all roughly the same age. And perhapse you may want to look into the history of earning rank in the military. There is no way in the firey deapths of hell that a man fresh out of the acadamy would be automaticaly promoted from Ensign to Captain. Jim Kirk skiped over Liutenent Junior Grade, Liutenent, Liutenent Comander, and Comander. thats 4 ranks. 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!!!!!

It maybe wasn't the best way to show Kirk make Captain, but it is explainable as we see Pike "fast track" Kirk to first officer. From the start of the movie it was obvious that Pike had an agenda with Kirk and getting him into Starfleet. (will the next movie explain this?)

Quote
And finaly we come to young Jim Kirk. How many kids that age in our 21st century listen to music from 200 years ago? What was running through your brain that told you "Duh!! Lets have young Jimmy be a Lincoln Park Fan

I could be wrong about this but wasn't the music player supposed to be "antique" from around our time, and as such it would have been loaded with music from around the late 20th early 21st century. Even the ring tone points to this.

All this over a movie.

How sad.

However, it's not like we haven't heard this b*tching before.

TOS fans didn't accept the change when TNG premiered, TNG fans didn't completely accept DS9, then didn't accept Voy. or ENT. and the same resistance is happening with this film.

TNG began the first cases of the fracturing of what was once one fanbase of Trek...those TOS fans that accepted TNG, those that didn't, and new fans of TNG who weren't Trek fans previously.

I welcomed each new series as it came along.

I wasn't welcoming the movie when it was announced because they went so long in making people think it was going to rewrite Trek history...but then finally they let on it was an alternate timeline and I realized I had nothing to worry about, and my opinion began to change.

:logical:

Welcome to the Dawn.  :D

This guy's ENTIRE strategy for winning a disagreement is to try to turn it around on you and shout 3rd grade schoolyard stuff like:

"I know you are but what am I?? I know you are but what am I??"

and

"No, YOU are...!!"

I mean literally, you can say "hey Zero, maybe you should stop popping into threads with one-sentence posts bashing the movie and/or posts trying to get other members angry."

and his response is always something like:

"No, YOU are the one who pops into threads trying to say bad things about people who don't like the movie. Maybe YOU should stop trying to just anger people!!!"

I suspect he's not capable of much more. I haven't seen the guy contribute anything meaningful besides Oh Noing and moaning since he appeared. Literally, I haven't seen anything.

You know, I may be a complete douchebag from time to time but I don't think I've ever come right out and started calling people names for no reason or have told someone they are wrong for having another opinion (which I don't believe in either.) I'll jump their their shit for saying some really dumb things though. Believe it or not, there are even a few pointers here and there that I may have agreed with from a critic!
