Star Trek new ST movie - canon or not?

Sorry if this has been discussed previously, but I was just re-watching STTNG S5 ep 7 'Unification' which seems to contain many contradictions to the new Star Trek movie regarding Spock's parentage. Is the new movie not meant to be part of the same canon as TNG?

Hm, even igonring the new movie, in Unification Picard says he only met Spock once, but the encyclopedia says Picard was present at Spock's wedding.

I don't understand how Picard meeting or not meeting Spock has anything to do with the new movie being "canon" or not.

It is an alternate reality created by the timeline incursion and alterations made by Nero's presence and interference.

Anything after 1/03/2233 is not the same as it was in the original timeline. The instant Nero's starship appeared and destroyed the USS Kelvin, a new reality was created.

This was actally covered in the new film.

the new movie establishes its own canon. So in a way yes and no.

I was wondering about that too.

Picard is only 70 something years old, not over a century. So how does him seeing Spock in a wedding many decades after Kirk's time has anything to compare about.

Are you thinking about the "Wedding" in a TOS episode?
That wedding didn't pull through IIRC.
So he probably got married again later in the 24th C.

In my opinion the "altered timeline" is a slap in the face. The altered timeline is just an excuse for getting rid of all the things that TNG, DS9 and VOY went trough withouth having to deal with them.

I'm not a stranger to Star Trek's famous "timeline issues", but c'mon give me a break!
