You can't deny, surely, that calling fans who don't like XI "desperate" does not help and to say that usually the negative emotions breed irrationality and aggressiveness. Rarely (although it DOES happen) do positive emotions breed ugly behavior, Vger, in my observation is not the case. Resentment for others disliking the film is not a positive emotion. It swings both ways. I have seen plenty of aggressive and defensive behaviour from both sides.

I see that once again, you are twisting what was actually said and using it to try to shore-up your point, while almost completely ignoring (or outright missing) the point that I was clearly trying to make.

What was actually said is this (with bold on areas you may not have caught or understood fully):

Quote
I think the problem (and it is a very human problem) is that the "I don't like it crowd" gets a very bad name by the behaviors and attitudes of a few people who allow their over-emotional reactions (sincere hatred) to override all else.

Anytime you throw emotions like hatred or severe disappointment into the arena, then rationality starts to suffer, and you see much of what you've seen here...which is that it becomes PERSONAL to people.

I think this is the reason that the people who DON'T like the film usually get looked at in more of a negative light. Usually the negative emotions breed irrationality and aggressiveness. Rarely (although it DOES happen) do positive emotions breed ugly behavior.

I think when you combine this with the unsettling emotion of "being in the minority," people tend to lash out more. You have to remember, for some people, this new movie represents the END of an entire universe that they hold very near and dear. It's "The Undiscoverd Country Syndrome," and you have desperate people grasping at anything they can to hold on to the way things were or "should be" in their minds.

I think the "rudeness" you may percieve on the other side is more of a reaction to this, rather than just outright blind attack.

So. let's review that shall we?

Bold point #1 means: There are many people who don't like the movie. They get a "bad name" because of the behavior and attitude of a limited FEW who behave like scorned and spoiled 4-year olds. That doesn't mean "everyone who hates the movie sucks" as you've chosen to interpert it. In fact, it meas exactly what it says.

Bold point #2 means: There are people who make this a personal battle. If that's you, then I'm sure it struck a nerve. For me, I don't give a rat's a$$ because there's no reason for me to be upset. I'm a lifelong Trek fan who DIDN'T get his feelings hurt by this movie, so I'm just fine. It's not personal to me. Is it for you?

Bold point #3 means: The items I have pointed out is likely why the entire "I don't like the movie crowd" unfairly gets looked at as a unit as a bunch of whiny, rude crybabies. Read into that: NOT EVERY person who dislikes the movie is an a$$, but the highly vocal, rude and immature minority falsely create the image for everyone else.

Bold point #4 means: There are some people who are so desperate for this movie to fail and for this new course that Star Trek has been set on to fail, that they will do and say anything. That doesn't say "people who don't like the new Star Trek are all desperate." That says that some people take this thing WAY too seriously and have allowed it to completely ruin their objectivity and rationality by getting so spun-up about it that they can't see things any other way.

And, for the record, I have seen VERY FEW people resent or dislike others SIMPLY for not liking the new movie. In fact, I'm happy to be open-minded and have you point out one instance on this board where someone "resents" someone else for simply not liking the movie.

See, "strongly debating" and "resentment" are two very different things. And frankly, the "resentment" I see from the "didn't like it" crowd is much more pure, directed, and irrational. The resentment from the "did like it" crowd is typically a reaction to this behavior and / or the "bad name" that has been built up by those few that chose be behave like spoiled brats who didn't get their way. That was the ENTIRE point of what I had written. You seem to have somehow missed it.

Hmmm. I see.
You're not a politician by any chance are you?

I'm disappointed that, after a genuine and pain-staking effort to clarify, the best you can do is respond only with a one-liner non-sequitur insult.

This is AT LEAST the third time that I have responded to your reactions with an attempt at clarification and understanding, while also providing you with an open door to further your points. You have not taken the opportunity to do so. Not even once. That means you are either "unwilling" or "unable" to do so. Whichever the case is, I guess it really doesn't matter, if this is going to be your way of dealing with being challenged. Clearly, you're here only to find comfort and affirmation from like-minded people.

Message received.

You ARE a politician!

"I won't worry about wasting any more time on you."

That seems a shame. I was rather enjoying myself. Still, we can't have people enjoying themselves on this board can we.

It's only a movie Ingrid.

Really though it is unfortunate when people attach points or issues with the people who are discussing them. We are all here to share ideas and compare thoughts. We need more Spock in this thread!

The only intolerance and unacceptance I see on these boards are from people who like this movie towards those of us who don't.

Really? I'm sure there on people on both sides of the fence that go a little to far at times although I have seen it more on the STXI side.

The hatred I've seen towards those who rant on and on about not liking the new movie though is usually because many who dislike the movie use insults to prove their point. After a while that does get old. Granted, that is not all people who do not like the new movie.

Either way, those on BOTH sides should not be happy with anyone that uses such unnecessary put down tactics and insults because it just gives the rest of those with that opinion a bad name.
