It's been a while since I've played, because I can't find anyone that likes to play chess... but here it goes - and these are the rules according to my official 3D-Chess Set.

The pieces are set up and move the same as in regular chess. Pieces can move or attack up, down, or on the same level for a single turn.

Regarding the movable levels - these can only be moved when emptied or a pawn is on them. Furthermore, levels can be moved up, down, across, or rotated - but each rotation counts as a turn. Movable levels can be acquired by the opponent if the opponent's game piece captures the original owner's game piece or occupies the empty level with a pawn.

You can also read the rules here. Feel free to ask any questions. Happy playing!!

Cool. I'll have to try it sometime. Thanks for the link.

In the episodes that have 3D chess, are they playing by these rules? Or did they sort of make the episodes first and then think up the rules later?

It kind of bugs me that they refer to this 3D chess as simply "chess" though. I seriously doubt that this variation would ever become the standard for this game, even far in the future.

They're not really playing by any rules other than a general chess approach. In fact, if you look closely in TNG, you can see non standard pieces like the robot from "Lost In Space".

As for the game becoming standard in the future, I believe culture is a continual state of change and refinement, so it may be possible. Though the two will most likely exist side by side. Look at the different forms of poker. And I've met several people, long time players of chess, that have become fascinated with the 3D version. But for it to become more popular, someone needs to mass produce the boards.

they do, but the rules themselves say, you must be a master chess player to play 3-D chess, it's just harder, I can play chess, i own the Franklin Mint Star Trek board, but I don't play, I'm not good enough, will I be, maybe someday.
