The show Enterprise is also comparable with Nemesis. Basically it is a case where both Star Trek products were mostly rejected by fans and the public. As we state there was a perceivable need for change or for Star Trek to have a rest. This is what I believe is indicated when previous producers refer to "franchise fatigue." That is not to say there was no market for Star Trek. But as it was being offered it was not a success.

Now there was a break in Star Trek for a few years after it was canceled. They also made a change in format. With this success the franchise is invigorated for new and existing fans. Many fans who did not accept Enterprise or Nemesis before are coming back to find they are good examples of Star Trek. In this way I am glad for the appreciation of new and existing fans for both new and existing Star Trek.

These are not simple stylistic changes. Star Trek: Enterprise had stylistic changes. There was a format to everything. All our aliens sounded the same, it was all about politics, and we're going to say the same things and do the same things. We'll even rip ourselves off and we'll do it to cheers!

This was a massive change in direction. They did the unthinkable--they fired Rick Berman. They touched the Original Series again and hired someone who has professed he is a larger Star Wars fan than Star Trek fan to write and direct this project.

It was a bold change.

I never agree with the complaint about Picard being on the away team and choosing to drive a dunebuggy. I thought this was very clearly expressed why they wished to do this. Sure I agree it is a wacky scene but that is part of the value. Picard is having fun!

Picard's suffering from empty nest syndrome in the film, basically a midlife crisis if you will.

Stuart Baird points that out in the commentary for NEM during the Dune Buggy scene.

That's why I like that scene. Picard's enjoying himself riding that thing! Is that really wrong? I'll answer that myself and say HELL NO!

Precisely! In addition to that he is having fun and adventure with his friends. I have not seen him smile like that for awhile.

Yes this is true and I agree. It was part of what Star Trek needed. That is not to say previous Trek is bad but it was declining in popularity and success. New creative input and a new approach was needed. I agree that Enterprise was similar despite how it was different. Not all fans will agree here but I see your point. Yes the new movie and direction was a bold change and I am excited for what is to come for Star Trek.

He also broke the prime directive doing that. That was my biggest pet peeve.

...i remember when even mentioning the name just brought venom from all points.

 I remember that, too.

I loved Nemesis (except for the score; we had this beautiful score on First Contact and a really nice one on Insurrection and then they go back to electronic, techno sounding...). Nonetheless, and I say the same thing now that I said back in '02, I knew the movie was doomed in the box office simply because of the competition that it was up against.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Die Another Day were released less than a month before Nemesis opened. And not even a whole week later, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers opened. Even coming in under Maid in Manhattan (which still baffles me), it was pretty much a given that it would not hold up against The Two Towers.

Bottom line, they should've held Nemesis back to January. Or maybe even to summer '03.

Any way, has anybody seen Tom Hardy lately? The dude got yoked for that Bronson movie! Can't wait to see him in Mad Max 4.
