Which episode has the line "it's life Jim"?

Probabably the most famoust line in all of Star Trek is "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it". But it's driving me mad trying to find out who exactly said it, and when. It might have been in the first series or possibly one of the early films. I thought it'd be easy to find out but it seems to be Google-proof. Imdb reckons it's the first film (Star Trek The Motion Picture) but I can't find any other evidence for that claim. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

Welcome aboard, Harold...

It was, I believe, said by McCoy, possibly in "Devil In The Dark."

Actually, the most famous line credited to Star Trek, "Beam Me Up, Scotty" was never said in an episode or the 10 original movies.

:logical:

Quite correct.

It was usually, "Beam us up, Mr. Scott", or, "Scotty, get us out of here" or the like.

This is the only one I could think of, from Errand Of Mercy:

Spock: Fascinating. Pure energy. Pure thought. Totally incorporeal. Not life as we know it at all.

Great stuff, many thanks for the kind words and, of course, for the comprehensive info. I knew I should have come to you guys first! Do I take it, then, that the line "it's life, Jim, but not as we know it" was never actually said? So it really is like "beam me up, Scotty" and "you dirty rat" and "play it again, Sam" and all those other famous misquotes? What about imdb's claim that a very similar line ("it's life, Captain, but not as we know it") was said in Star Trek The Motion Picture?

From 'Devil in the Dark'

SPOCK: Within range of our sensors, there is no life, other than the accountable human residents of this colony beneath the surface. At least, no life as we know it.

SPOCK: Life as we know it is universally based on some combination of carbon compounds, but what if life exists based on another element? For instance, silicon.

Thanks trekbuff and others for the detailed info. The imdb claim (that the line comes from The Motion Picture) can be seen at the following address (sorry if I haven't posted the link properly)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079945/quotes

As to the song, I think you're right that that's the true source of the misquote. I believe The Firm (who came up with the song) are a British group so it may be that the line "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it" is even more prevalent in the UK & Ireland (where I'm from) than elsewhere. The media here use the line at least once a week, which is why I thought it was the most popular of all Trek quotes (though I agree with whoever pointed out that "Beam me up, Scotty" is even more well known - I'd forgotten that one...)

Thanks so much to everyone who has chipped in on this. It's great to get such expert help in nailing a question that had nagged me for years!
