I am probably leaning towards yes, even though the Spock/Uhura idea is strewn with gaping defects in logic.  :logical:

I'm a big yay for STXI.

Yes it has problems, but then so does All Trek.

I was only thinking the other about the whole 'Brewery' situation with Engineering in STXI, and it occured to me that that too is very Star Trek (particularly TOS), run out of money (which is what is rumoured to have happened to JJ and his people) and make do. They probably got the 'Brewery' at a snip. As far as I am concerned it just adds to the wonderful 'cheese' factor.

Watching STXI (and especially the Extras) I am struck by how much fun everyone was obviously having and how incredibly proud they all were to be playing these characters. It distresses me when people slag off at them (especially JJ) and say that they 'disrespected Star Trek fans'. I see no disrespect at all, quite the contrary, they obviously took enormous care and attention to detail to create this delightful, fun movie.

I had to think hard about this before I answered, but in the end I went with 'mixed positive and negative'.

Positive things to me are mainly the effect the film has had on the franchise as a whole. It seems to have given it a shot of adrenaline.
And this is also the film that got me into Trek, so I will always love it for that.
It looks good, for the most part, the music is great, the performances are fantastic when you consider the characterisations they were given to work with, and the opening scene is just electric (and my favourite scene in the film).

The negatives include the new characterisations (and I'm blaming this on the script rather than the actors), the Romulans as completely lame and ineffective villains IMO, and Spock/Uhura.

Oh okay I understand what you are saying more clearly. And I pretty much agree with you.  :)

And for what it's worth, I'll still be really excited to see STXII, because they might just hit their stride with this one, now that they don't have to deal with the 'crew coming together' story.

I watched the DVD over the weekend. I hate that the inurds of the ship look like a turn of the century chemical plant. I hope they fix that in the next movie.

Mixed feelings leaning toward yay...

For other thoughts, I've posted in numerous other threads about the movie...

:logical:

I concur with your mostly okay-yay.

You may laugh, but kudos to George Kirk- one heroic son-of-a-gun.

Mixed feelings

Great to see the crew

Great to see the Enterprise

Uhura and Spock is wrong

Kirk being promoted so quickly is wrong

Nero wanting to destroy the Federation  wrong

Hope Trek XII is more story driven like TWOK

A definite yay for me. I loved the movie and feel most of the actors are perfect for their roles. The nacelles on the alternate Enterprise still look a little big for me but I'll get used to it.

I just want to know that somewhere the orignal timeline is still preserved somewhere (no planets destroyed) and there are way more vulcans than 10,000.

did any one watch the extra features on the DVD?

Yes, and I saw how Nero escape from the Klingon prison.

Mixed.

I like good ideas. I like good acting, chemistry, costumes and cinematography. This movie didn't have them. It draws attention to a once-great, but does not pay homage in the way I would have wished.

Are you kidding? It had good acting and chemistry, costumes were good as well.

Although I do understand how you feel about it paying homage.

I prefer Star trek: Of Gods and Men myself
