I'm trying to get my gf into loving Star Trek. i'm a huge fan for tng, voyager and ds9.
what episodes would you recommend? so far i have: The Inner Light The Drumhead Measure of a Man and finally All Good Things once she gets the gist of it all. once she (hopefully) gets "into it" I would start with the borg episodes.
she's not really into any gore or violence (but likes the Terminator franchise), more of a drama person but still open to new experiences.
any other ideas or experiences?

Off to a good start it looks like. I recommend "Who Watches The Watchers", "Darmok", "Hollow Pursuits" & "The Nth Degree", "Elementary, Dear Data" & "Ship In A Bottle", "Brothers"; more romantic episode - "Captain's Holiday" & "QPid", "In Theory"

I say start from the beginning. Let her see it in sequence.

I respectfully disagree. I HATED the first season of TNG. It was so bad it nearly turned me off from the rest of the series. Please let your GF watch something from later into the show! |
Er, but season 1 has "The Naked Now", where my character takes over the ship!

I agree with MS. Start with season 3. I've tried to get my wife into ST too. She always had a soft-spot for the original show because, as a designer I think, she has a soft-spot for the 60s. She really likes the original show because of the way it looks, it's sexiness and action, and, of course, she loves Spock. She likes a bit of TNG, but not nearly as much as the original show. VOY she doesn't like at all. She's made me turn it off.

But I loved seeing De Kelley in "Encounter at Farpoint"...I wasn't really aware that he'd pop up in that ep, and I was stunned when I heard his voice and accent come out!! I guess I'm just a big TOSer at heart. |
Me too! I was really surprised when Bones showed up! From everything I'd read about TNG prior to its premiere, it sounded like they weren't going to have many, if an references to the original show. Plus, it's 85 years later! Seeing Bones in Farpoint was a complete and very happy surprise. It was a wonderful, touching scene. It's a shame they didn't bring him back in an episode. IMO, that was the best part of FP. It's really the only thing I'd be interested in seeing again in that entire episode.

What you got there are good ideas. Just don't start off with anything from season one. Save that for if she really does get into it.

Before you show your girlfriend any episodes or movies of star trek, you must first explain to her the worth and relevance of star trek and why it is such a great and important tv show
Star Trek shows us a bright and hopeful future where religion, war, poverty, diseases, racism and prejudice has all come to an end on Earth (or at least coming to an end)
Everyone has become well educated and are enlightened about science, morality and even philosophy
Human technology has evolved so far that we have learnt how to travel faster than light and we have built starships and gone off exploring the universe
Star Trek is not just about exploring the universe but it's about exploring ourselves and exploring life itself
It's about us taking a look at ourselves in the mirror- looking at our own history- seeing how far we've already come and then looking at our own future and seeing how far we can truly go
Star Trek is one of the most important shows that's ever been put on television
Star Trek's vision and philosophy for the future is timeless and universal

Forget about the Bynars. I liked the ep because of THIS! Minuet! About McCoy, of course I love it when there's a TOS reference anywhere. DS9 has the most TOS references.

Now I recall that as a very good and compelling episode, and it made me want to learn more about TNG. Which ep was that, and what season? |
"Tapestry" 6x15

"Tapestry" is one of the best great episodes of TNG!!! However I would not recommend it as a first episode because it deals a lot about Picard's character and what the viewer knows about him. Sort of like Trek's version of "It's a wonderful life."
