Many complain around here that there's not enough moderation. CBS says they are short handed and don't have time to moderate the board. Why not make some of the members here moderators?
A few of the members are administrators and moderators on other boards and do a great job. Why couldn't they moderate this board and report to the CBS admins. If there's a problem with the way they moderate, the admins could straighten it out after the fact.
If there is a problem with a member and a moderator thinks that member should be banned, he/she would obviously carry a lot of weight in recommending the banning to the CBS admins. They can then review what's going on and make a decision. I think that would be a lot more fair than the way it's been done recently.
Well?

There would be too much whining from those who dislike whomever was chosen. No offence meant but I wouldn't want any member here to be able to moderate this board. They may do a good job elsewhere, running their sites perfectly, but there are just too many clashes here to make it work.

hell no.
It would be a legal nightmare for the company and a nightmare here too. A huge board like this is best run by people who are not part of the community.

I've always been partial to letting people having control of and moderating threads that THEY start/create, but in this place it would cause nothing problems

Well, not everyone posts on every board. So you could get different people to moderate on boards they don't usually post on. Ten forward would be an entirely different story, but there might be some that don't post on that board too often and don't have any ties to the various factions around here.
Why would it create a legal problem for CBS? I wouldn't give the mods any more power other then the ear of the true CBS admins. It would be their final say no matter what happens. If a mod is abusing his or her power that could easily be reviewed as well.

For the above reasons listed, it would be a legal nightmare for CBS to allow posters of this site to become moderators.

CBS would not want to be responsible for the actions/remarks/behavior of someone they have no real control over.
A member mods ticks someone off and that person goes screaming to CBS with his/her lawyer. Something they obviously don't want.
 |
Well that member would have to prove they suffered a hardship because of the actions of that moderator and that the moderator was acting within the scope of his or her responsibility. It would be very hard to prove that and quite frankly I can't imagine someone hiring a lawyer to do it. Again, the moderator could not ban the person, or have an official capacity over them. The most he or she could do is make the CBS mods/admins aware of a poster's actions and give his or her recommendation of how it's handled.

*IF* members would be allowed to moderate threads they create, it would almost be akin to having a type of subjective "ignore" function on the board.
Certainly not necessarily a "bad" thing in certain situations.

Then outside of the "recommendation" part of that, it's no different than using the report button or PMing the staff like anyone can already do...
 |
except for the moderators are in contact with the admin frequently and have been chosen by the admin to moderate the board. That's why members would have incentive to listen to a moderator when he or she says, "please stay on topic" or "that post is deemed a flame," etc.. Think about it, anyone interested in being a mod could apply. Perhaps someone has to be a member for six months. It could even be done on a rotational basis. I think it would be better than no moderation at all. Some of the threads really get way out of hand and if anything I think CBS has more exposure. If I didn't post here I would think this would be a great site for my 13 year old daughter. I would be happy she was a Trekkie and figure she couldn't get into too much trouble posting with her little geek friends on a ST.com message board. Imagine my surprise if as a parent not knowing any better I decide to lurk one day and read some of these threads?
