I've heard it said before numerous times. I think it is utter garbage.
Just because you are in the military or even served in theater does not make you a "hero."
Anyone agree with me? Or do you agree with the original statement? |
Not everyone, no. But plenty certainly are. And not only in military uniforms, either.

Well being in the Army I must agree with you. One of the biggest shitbags I've know all my life was deployed. He was a shitbag before he left and he's a shitbag now. Then there are those that say, "Well if I'm in a convoy and a five year old points an AK at me I'm going to shoot her." Yeah, that's real classy. Especially considering you can unload an AK-47 into an MRAP or any up-armored vehicle all day without hurting it. Thats not even considering that the kid's probably not going to hit anything. So yeah, bastards join the military too. In fact, I would say the majority of people in the military are ass holes who never see combat but act bad ass. Most people join because they are trying to fill an insecurity.

In the long and honored history of America There are names that shine like beacons in the night The Patriots whose vision gave us meaning Who kept the lamp of freedom burning bright
In the long and honored history of America There are those that paid the last and final price Who were called upon by chance, or desperate circumstance To make the ultimate sacrifice
A grateful nation bows its head in sorrow And in thanks for guaranteeing our tomorrow The last full measure of devotion That's what they gave to the cause
The last full measure of devotion And though they cannot hear our applause We honor them forever and keep alive their story Pay tribute to their lives and give them all the glory
The last full measure of devotion Beyond the call of duty were their deeds The last full measure of devotion They gave themselves to serve the greater need
And for those who did survive And came back home alive They join in praise of comrades who were slain And highly resolved, most highly resolved That these dead shall not have died in vain

I don't feel like a hero. All the uniform gets me is lots of girls want to talk to me.

Not all military service members are heroes, but Cruervo is wrong when he says "most" of us are No Nos who act bad ass. While I know a good number of No Nos in the military, the majority that I've met aren't like that at all. The soldiers involved with the abuse at Abu Ghraib are among those that cannot be considered heroes.

I guess it's how you define a hero. I think most people define it as acting in a certain way in a dangerous situation. Seems to me that people in this thread are defining it as being a great person all the time. Not that I don't think being a great person all the time is an admiral thing. I just don't think it fits the definition of heroic.

I think the point is that putting on a uniform is being heroic in itself. If you define hero as putting your life on the line to help others.

It's like the statement: "Support our Troops." Does that support include when they are raping women and killing children? The sentiment is noble, but leads directly to abuse. Hence, my signature below. You want to know why various governments don't use robotic soldiers for invasions--even though they might be more effective in the long run? Because nobody is going to put a bumper sticker on their car that says: "Support our Robots." It is the same reason the Americans haven't nuked anybody in 70 years. Support for mass murder on a biblical scale seldom sells. People are still arguing (10 forward included) over whether the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were warranted.

But... you are a racist.... ¿ ¿ |
I am not racist. I just choose the people I want to have contact with just like all the people I know. and I do not care about the skin colour but about the behaviour.
