Is Janeway a popular Captain?

So I wasn't around when Voyager first came out. After having seen only a couple of episodes of VOY so far, my over-riding first impression is that Janeway is one cool Captain.

But I'm wondering what the reaction was to her when the series first aired? Were people excited to have a female Captain?

She does seem quite sarcastic at times, and has a very dry sense of humour. Did people take to her personality straight away?

i don't know about her personality, but as for a female captain in a trek series i remember there being an uproar (especially among the fans still living in their parents' basement).  but, if people truly had a problem with kate mulgrew, their heads would've exploded if they'd have watched genevieve bujold.  she was the original captain.

bujold as "nicole janeway"

i really liked janeway's humor and attitude and thought ms. mulgrew did a superb job in the role. coming out of the series there are some actors who really owned their roles (meaning you can't see another actor portraying that character) and mulgrew as janeway was one of them. as the series goes on and you see the other characters have a central episode i think you'll see what i mean.

I recall a lot of fans at the time calling her "moody" Some days she was all "StarFleet Principles" and other days she was about "whatever it takes to get home"

I thought it made her more real. I liked that her moods effected her positions. Hell, she even played favouritism with the crew. Loved Janeway!

I liked Janeway, she came across as real to me and I found her a good character played by a good actress.  I did not care one way or another that she was a woman, I simply wanted a good character played well, and she came across to me that way.

I have to agree if they had stuck with Bujold it would have been a disaster for the show IMO.  Her limited screen time for the character came across as horrible.

She came off as far too arrogant for my taste.  She seemed to know everything, and even when she didn't know everything, she acted like she did.  I understand there's a certain talent for acting like you are always in command of the situation, but whereas Picard and Kirk pulled that off perfectly, Janeway just seemed like she was being arrogant.

That being said, I didn't hate her, and Mulgrew did a fantastic job with the part.

I liked Janeway. When they did a show with the first female captain, I honestly thought it was just a gimmick, and I really didn't like the idea. But after watching it, I thought they did a great job with Janeway and she became one of my favorite characters.

arrogant???  are you kidding??  well, i know you're not but still...kirk defined and set the bar for arrogance and smugness in trek lore. the difference b/t kirk and janeway is that kirk (outside of strategy and tactics) was somewhat of a dumb@ss whereas janeway actually had a legitimate background in the sciences.  at least picard also had a science background but he seemed to be too aloof to want help out his crew at any point outside of giving a command of "engage!"  to me she had more of an explorer's heart than kirk or picard did.

now, did she stick her nose in too many things?  yeah, i'll agree with that.  but, i probably would've too b/c i am that curious too. i guess i consider janeway to be more of an "everyman's" captain more than any of the others.

IMO Janeway was the most true to life Military officer in the Trek universe. Deeply committed to the welfare of her crew, she also displayed firmness of command and dedication to mission. In this case the return of her ship to Federation space. A humane, caring commander that can accomplish mission as well as maintaining focus on the objective at hand is a gem. Janeway is the best.

I got the impression people either loved Janeway or hated her. I remember one friend said that they couldn't stand her voice. Another friend said that it seemed like she knew too much science.

That being said, Janeway was a science officer and had that background. And she commanded a much smaller vessel, so I liked seeing that type of interaction. It was fun watching Janeway be on the ball, jumping on a crewman's idea, and keeping up with their explanation.

I think brcarthey saying Picard was aloof is a little harsh, since his experience was in diplomacy, command, and archeology.  (And personally - Chris Pine is a dumbazz, Kirk is freaking awesome.) But I do agree with Kirk setting the bar for arrogance and smugness.

And I liked her sense of humor too.

It's nice to see so much love for Janeway here...right now she's my second favourite Trek character after Spock.

There were a small number of times when I did think Janeway went overboard or was a little crazy, but (and I'm sorry if this offends) I attributed it to female biology.

I do love Janeway though. I loved how she welcomed the Maquis aboard and opened up to Torres. Loved how she looked after Ensign Kim. Loved how she encouraged Paris and gave him a second chance. She had a good, heart warming smile too... even those wry smiles. Those were fun to watch.
