Wow, this is an interesting thread, but I can't be bothered to go back and read all 8 pages!! If I jump in to subsequent discussions, please don't ostracize me if I say something that someone already said!

For what it's worth, I really think Trek should introduce a gay character. It doesn't need to be gratuitous or a big deal - romances have always been a part of Trek, and I think a gay character could be easily be incorporated. Maybe it's a major character who refers to his/her partner who is serving at another location. Maybe it is a crew member whose civilian family is on board with him, and his family just happens to consist of two dads and a child. Or maybe it's just two same-sex characters who have never been shown in any romantic light before, and they gravitate toward each other.

And for the record... any dog owner will tell you that on-the-mouth kisses with your dog is totally normal and not in any way sexual. ;) My dog has even managed to slip me the tongue once or twice! (He aims while he's licking my face and I'm telling him "Good kisses!" or something, and then, op, dog tongue in my mouth. Kind of gross, but you get used to it. I will also eat food he has licked.)

And how to introduce a gay character now would, for that reason, attract more attention than it merits, since--as in real life--gay people are simply there, we don't want the characters there for any different a storyline than we give the heteros.
i think it possible
to do this subtly with what
we already have in place.

believe ds9 had casual references
to alien families we never saw.
babysitting and so forth
for clearly differently formed
sentient persons who were in
residence on ds9.
now why not begin there.
in the background talk...
about a species that has only one gender.
about the mommies and their child.
about jack and jim finally deciding to build a life together.
background fill talk.
a sentence here,
a party invitation there,
the shower for the guys' baby
who has just emerged from its egg.
mona and christy are dating now...
everyone but them knew they would.
background fill talk
keep it short
keep it behind the camera for an extended period
but keep in the casual conversational dialogue.
.........
we could introduce a same sex relationship on camera
with the loss of a beloved spouse.
that would climb many hurdles in the beginning.
start with a sympathetic person.
the character could now develop as an individual
whom we, as an aside, know to be gay.
........
eventually do what is done by much
of the other trek characters.
some flirts that amount to nothing.
some flings that amount to nothing.
trips off world that we only get to hear about.
allusions to something now and then.
remembered stories shared with friends
of life with the lost love.

that is just one way.
i can come up with half a dozen more.

Wow, this is an interesting thread
..............

Hi Tao Trek. :) I'm not familiar with the term Yaoi...is it a "slash" thing? I don't know a lot about slash, but I've been learning (on this thread--or another one right before it).

I'm fine with people writing whatever they want, more power to ya, but I liked the idea of this thread: simply to discuss what the "canon" Trek writers have done to explore sexuality--and what they haven't done, and possibly "why not". Though I haven't got too much of an answer to that one, except perhaps the relative levels of participation in this thread...

And NO, I have no familiarity with Porthos slash, either! Just some good clean ScreenCaptions.

Yaoi is a term used for Japanese Anime and Manga to describe a relationship that is guy/guy.(As upposed to Yuri, which is girl/girl.) So, basically it is "Slash", but in a different artistic format.

I have no idea how Porthos slash works and as a pet owner, I REALLY don't want to know! :D
