I voted NO ...... I don't think Kirk should be anything but captain but then I started thinking and maybe changed my mind a bit, I think I could watch Kirk as commander if the rest of the crew were new and unknown, however it would be hard to fit strong bonds between these new characters and Commander Kirk without affecting future Captain Kirk.

If William Shatner is willing to play any new role for James Kirk in Star Trek, then that would be great. Any actor other than Shatner who plays the part of Kirk is an abomination! Using the names of the original characters with different actors was a bad mistake.

They handed Kirk the captain's chair to Enterprise in the new movie, no? Why would they renege on that?

Trek fans yes but general public not so sure. Commander Kirk does have a nice ring if it were to be made before this new movie. It is no longer an option but could possibly work under right circumstances.

I could have watched Pike as Cpt with Kirk as his XO or Spock. I didn't think I'd like Pike from the description/views I saw before the movie, but I could have watched Cmdr. Kirk in either universe.

There are very many fans. One thread cannot contain all the opinions. I am welcome to change after all it is the way of life.

I also feel to characterize most fans as resistant to change is inaccurate however the term traditional implies a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting and a continuing pattern of culture beliefs or practices. So there are also traditional fans who are resistant to change. I feel a goal of the new movie is to shake these preconceptions away of being so resistant to change but also to do it within the context of cultural tradition.

I am trying to understand your feelings and concerns but I feel mostly you are upset with a few people in particular on the Movies forum and not with a subset of fans.

Well just be careful you are not the one who they are picking fights with or when there is conflict you can discuss the issues in a reasonable manner?

The other day someone (I can't remember who) said that Trek fans would't be able to accept a movie where Kirk wasn't the captain of the Enterprise, and that was why the makers of the new film rushed him into the big chair.

I don't think that's true, I'd have no problem with a good series of movies with Commander Kirk. I'd even leave out some of the traditional characters, who probably wouldn't have been about when he was first officer.

What about you?

It's a purist point of view and I can dig it. However, Star Trek is about a certain group of characters so you couldn't easily sell a movie to the masses without them all in it.

This is a good point. They wanted to return to the essence of Star Trek and essentially show the story of the Original Series crew coming together under new circumstances.

Thanks, man. (Or woman, of course)
