Was it so hard to make a modernized kick-azz version of the TOS or A engine room?

God! This Movie had the biggest budget ever for a Trek movie, almost 3 times Nemessis.
They could have done better.

Good point. The original design in the movie's art book was excellent. Still, at least Scotty can now brew ale at the office.

It wasn't tha bestest engine room in Trek, but I liked it more than the TOS engine room...

I totally disagree. I think Matt Jefferies designed a superb and accurate future engine room. He felt at that time most everything would be computer controlled and could be monitored from the bridge with minimal crew interfaces needed in the engine room. 50 years later, I think maritime development had proved him right. Jefferies' room is the most insightful.
