In Star Trek's universe holodecks were invented long after the invention of warp drive. Exploring the galaxy would be more fun and adventurous than living a life in the holodeck. To quote Q in "All Good Things", "How boring." Sure a program of Risa would be fun, but being on Risa would be better. Humans in the 24th Century only use it as a temporary diversion or a means to bond with a friend - like Data and Geordi with the Sherlock Holmes program. But don't forget our characters have jobs that they are passionate about, not jobs that get them from paycheck to paycheck. This is reinforced by Earth's economy which no longer uses money (it's predominantly shown that it's the Federation that uses a credit system), freeing humans to enter into fields of work that stimulate their interests.

If a holodeck were invented in real life, prior to warp drive... there are still people that would rather live in the real world and integrate with nature. It's analogous to drugs (consider this a general comparison). Some use drugs as an escape and become addicted; some use drugs to gain temporary relief and never have a problem; others don't use the stuff at all for lack of desire, fear, propaganda, etc.... I personally would have a problem going camping in the holodeck because it's like going camping in your backyard or being within 100 miles of your home - it's a cheat and it defeats the purpose.

But I wouldn't mind turning off gravity, playing Superman, and having John Williams' Superman score sound out of air all around me as I'm running down an alley way. But the adventure would probably end after two hours. Likewise, I think holodecks would be used to enhance businesses or entertainment mediums. For example, I would use it to enhance and give greater depth to my writing.

We all know holodecks would be mostly used for porn, just like the internet is now. :logical:

Holodacks don't create real alcohol and I'd miss the touch of a real woman too.

However, stuff like an interactive HALO, GTA, Call of Duty & Final Fantasy would be awesome on a holodeck.

You do have a point. I never really liked the whole crazy safeties off in the holodeck routine every other episode. It got ridiculous after awhile.  :eyesroll:
