ST XII to be a modern day allegory

From Trekmovie.com:

Quote

JJ Abrams:
"The ambition for a sequel to ¿Star Trek¿ is to make a movie that¿s worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters ¿ their meeting each and galvanizing that family ¿ that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn¿t mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths ¿ truths connected to what we live ¿ that elevates any story ¿ that¿s true with any story."

And Bob Orci added:
"
We¿ve literally had two meetings now. We haven¿t decided anything but we¿re starting to circle around some ideas. We got a lot of fan response from the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of the things we heard was, ¿Make sure the next one deals with modern-day issues.¿ We¿re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what¿s going on today as possible. So that¿s one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today."

So what modern day issues? Is War and Torture in our Trek future?, Here is another excerpt:

I asked Orci somewhat flippantly if that meant we might see Starfleet grappling with the ethics of torture or dealing with a rising terrorist threat or perhaps a painful, politicized war with the Klingons.

"Well yeah, those are the kind of issues we¿re talking about. Wow, you¿re good! But seriously that¿s the way we¿re thinking, that¿s an approach. So if you have any ideas ¿ "

Looks like Orci and Kurtzmann and Abrams are on the same page as many fans and some of the critics.  They're going to try to do something allegorical in the best ST tradition for ST XII, now that they got the characters re-established.

Let the complaints begin!

sounds great to me.  if they go in some kind of a war direction..........you pretty much have to go with klingons.

lets face it.........the 2nd movie had to have a big star trek draw.......which are klingons romulans or khan

Whenever he praises Roddenberry I want to bop Abrams on the head.

Well we haven't seen the Klingons on the big screen since Star trek VI so I think it is time to show them again.

And please show the bumpy headed Klingons if you do!!

No Klingons? It's because they were cut from STXI leaving folks wondering what happened to Nero until he suddenly showed up after 25 years without aging a year - the Dick Clark of villains.

I can just picture the episodes of "Romulan Bandstand" in my head. :D

Why does it have to be about war and torture to apply to current events?

No one said it had to be.

I wouldn't mind seeing terrorists within the Federation... not agreeing with certain principles and going against and striking from within using guerilla/terrorist tactics, led by a menacing human character - but NOT Khan.

Why does it have to be about war and torture to apply to current events? What about the world economy? Rich countries with plenty and poor countries with folks having 5 children just so they have one who lives? How about the eventual end to natural resources?

The fact they are even considering addressing current issues of any kind is a good sign.

Well I can't imagine the movie will take place too far after 2258 so bumpy headed Klingons would be a canon violation. And yes I am taking into account the new timeline. The augment dna mutation occured well before 2233 as well all know. Nero's incursion could not have casued the Klingons to get their ridges back so quickly as opposed to in the old timeline.

And from a budget standpoint save some of those makeup ridges and put them into a more fully dressed engineering set this time.

Yes Enterprise Terra Prime John Frederick Paxton sounds familiar.

Knowing them they would probably turn Trek 12 into a "Jarhead" like war movie in their attempts to take Trek even further away from the traditional model. It would sell well though.

What? A modern day allegory? No Cloverfield in STXII? No The Island and The Others? No Shia LaBeouf?

I will be surprised if Orci/Kurtzman will conceive an allegory more profound than that of G.I.Joe.
