I admit defeat, I can't find my elevator anywhere, though Wikipedia has some cool stuff if you type in "space elevator".

They describe just the wire, I talked about on top of the structure, however they seem to extend from the ground to the counterweight, and are made of some non-existent nanotube. The elevator itself wouldn't work like the ones that you and I know, but rather be climbers on the side.

Sorry for going off topic so long, I thought this was interesting and somewhat relative. And yeah, 35,790km, you're all smarter than me ('cept you dryson).

Where does "space" start?

Perhaps by looked at the external links or references on Wikipedia's "space elevator" pages, you might find what you're looking for.

You're in the same boat as most of us; an fanatic for science!

Good question about where space starts.
There's no real boundry. I suppose if one is well into the mesosphere, space can be said to "begin".

The key to is get above most of the resistence. Even where the ISS and Hubble orbit, there's still some resistence, but it's minute (though measurable).

The space elevator your talking about needs a break through in nano technology before it's possible. The biggest problem we have with any project these days is that they would become instant terrorist targets.

well let's see here, the hard part would be finding volunteers without medical problems, aren't lazy, and have some form of experience in exploration, survival or otherwise. then provisioning and finding a planet. at least a week's supply of water when people wake up food for a year. plus tools and beasts of labor.

I think we can predict every single step of our journey from Earth to the stars, except for what the people on board will do.

This is where a generation ship or space arc is our best option for colonization. Plenty of people, and culture, will survive the journey. But, as I stated before the only variable is whether or not the future generation will leave the arc, upon arrival of the target star.

Otherwise, the only answer I can give for break-ups, deaths, cheating and the eventual emotional collapse, CABIN FEVER (don't rule this out! A few years on a starship could result in some of the worse cases yet!!!;) and the like is... ???

Maybe... plenty of porn and ecstasy. The porn will condition our crew to be more blase about swapping partners and the like, and the ecstasy will leave them so euphoric they won't get caught up with any emotional issues, and will be always on the look for love (not to mention, unable to operate a staship). Then the future culture of Earth 2 will be promiscuous junkies. Sounds like maintaining the culture of Earth 1 doesn't it?

Yeah I'm sorry for the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll part. It was just an elaborate way to say that I have no idea how you would "control" the things we're discussing.

I kinda get the universe, but I don't understand people at all...

If we have the technology to build such a ship, I'm certain we will have the knowhow to make drugs that suppress the human sexual drive until needed.  If not, they can just show reruns of The View, 24/7 on all the monitors.

Probably better "The View" than "Oprah".  :)

People like me on the ship could be driven nuts by watching "Ghost Hunters" or other paranormal hooey.  :O

Result...

Ship arives at destination with all crew and passengers dead!

Watching that show would make anyone take their own life.

It's really that bad?

To be honest, I've never seen it!

What show or shows would you recommend to at least attempt to boost moral?

Aside from "Star Trek" that is, since that would be a given here!

Drugs would not be needed to curb the human sexual human drive as you call it. The human sexual drive is not based on making yourself feel better through sexual stimulation, sex is meant to continue the human species. Those that throw sex around like it is a toy to be played with are as mindless as those that follow Darwinism.

The best way to curb the supposed sexual desire's is not to constantly look at a woman as a means of expanding your kingdom by breeding more offspring then the next male, but the bests way to curb the chemical reaction that is produced by the female to let her mate know that she is ready to breed is to not worry about sex all together, but instead worry about
making sure that all of the cargo containers have been set to the right temperature as well as making sure that what your goals are for the next day are at the foremost of your thoughts. Sex is only meant for one purpose and cannot ensure your safe arrival to planet X.
