So for all the fans that are so concerned about the long term health of the franchise - what exactly are they looking to see?

A new tv series. 16 hours of material per year instead of 2.5 hours every 3 years. This new star trek does not lend it self to a tv series. James bond is pure action, attitude and gadgets (like the new trek)and by all account one of the most successful franchises out there but it can never hold peoples attention for more than 2 hours and has never been made a TV series. The new trek could turn out bond in space movies for the next 50 years turning a good profit but it would still get less than half the screen time of a 7 year series.

I hate how they just did whatever they wanted, changed whatever they wanted, and just claimed "alternate universe!!!!" It's such a cop-out answer. You can do anything and just claim "alternate universe".It's like when something big happens on a tv show, like someone dies for example, and a the end, a cast member wakes up cuz it was all a dream. I enjoy this movie, but it was a total cop-out to claim alternate universe.

I wonder how star wars would feel about their stories being rewritten and their old ones being ignored. As for Bond, here is a good parallel of what star trek did. The new movies were great, loved them and it was nice in that the characters and concept identifies were the same but the story was better grounded and not as "out there". At the same time, I would have preferred to have pierce brosnan and Q back in a traditional movie. In enjoyed the fun and techiness.

You can reinvent franchises like galactica, and bond because they haven't woven entire universes and myriads of characters. But trek, star wars, dr who. These have massive universes of stories and characters with a fan base emotionally attached to them. Dr who reinvented itself quite well to gain a new audience and 2 branch shows but did so without breaking continuity. Trek could too. But like Dr who, I think the nature of star trek means it should exist on television instead of the theater anyways because the medium is better suited for this delivery method.

Good points and documentation, jedi.
