I am still a Trek Fan but what if NBC passed on Star Trek? I guess we would still have Star Wars but would their be any other Scifi shows? Would their still be Battlestar Galactica and Stargate?

I definitely think science fiction and television would be different. Trek pushed a lot of social and technical boundaries for a TV show of its time.

i doubt that we would have had Star Wars, BSG, or or other shows like Stargate. Trek set the bar for all Sci-Fi series, and will continue to do so well into the future.

Ithink you would have had a "star trek type" show which would have led to the current outpouring of sci-fi. The question should be, would it have been as popular.

no no no wrong

George Lucas himself is a trekkie and has confessed that he borrowed or stolen many themes and concepts from Star Trek and has said that if there was no star trek, there'd be no star wars

There might not be cell phones, Internet, and many other inventions that were inspired by Star Trek.

NBC did in fact pass it up in 1964 based on the original pilot episode, The Cage. The creators were sent back to the drawing board, and two years later Star Trek was finally accepted, in 1966.

Just think of all the references to Trek that would be missing from our culture.

Racial diversity on television might not have existed either. Kirk locking lips with Uhura and a Russian serving on a American ship during the Cold War era was pretty risque back then.

Everyone has good comments. It would be sad to think of no Star Trek.

Before Star Trek there was The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. There also were movies like War of the Worlds, Forbidden Planet (1956), and others. Roddenberry took many of his ideas directly from Forbidden Planet. He was also inspired by the real-life space race between the USA and the USSR, which was in full gear during the 1960's.

Wasn't Lost In Space the series which included Robby the Robot? That robot was first introduced in the movie Forbidden Planet.

NBC allegedly rejected The Cage because it portrayed a female as the first officer (Majel Barrett as Number One), and that concept was unacceptable in 1964.

Fainting at the thought of no Trek.
No fond memories of watching TOS as a child.
No Trek conventions.
No Trek novels.
No "Live Long and Prosper."
No "Good of the many outweigh... etc."
No 7 of 9.
No Patrick Stewart.
Most likely no Denny Crane with all of his Star trek friends who star on Boston Legal.

No understanding of what it is like to be thrown out of an airlock or having your brain drilled out and hand cut off only to become a drone.

Sheesh, so much more would never have happened.  Life as we know it would have ceased to exist or happen. :p
