Once the TOS cast was finally in place, (DeForest Kelley reports as Chief Medical Officer) who was the most accomplished actor on the set? I would guess DeForest from all his work in Westerns.

What say you?

Shatner was no slouch, either. He had done a lot of television work in both Canada and the U.S., and was also a Shakespearean-trained stage actor. Nimoy had basically been a struggling actor for about 15 years before he landed the part of Spock, however.

I think the most recognizeable name to the majority of the American population would be DeForest Kelley.
You know what's weird? A lot of people involved in Trek (De, Coon, Freiberger) were involved in westerns.

Kelley, he was well known at the time for playing heavies in Westerns. Also he had been acting alot longer then the others.

Kelley was in a lot of stuff, but was usually a character actor doing bit parts and bad guy roles. Nimoy was in stuff too, but much of it were serials and pilots. Shatner was an "on the rise" guy with a few things under his belt.

I don't think any of them were well-known. They were all B-listers, not because of lack of talent, but due to never starring in a series.

De Kelley was definitely the most known actor. I saw an interview somewhere with one of the top brass guys and he said it was De. Jimmy Doohan was pretty known in Canada, more known than Bill Shatner in Canada, but by far the most known actor overall was De.

All garnered from Wikipedia, but from having read all of Bill's books, I don't think the television list aboe is actually exhaustive: for example he did a show called 'The Defenders', a legal drama, which had a number of episodes and was then cancelled (saw excerpts from it last night in the Boston Legal episode 'Son of The Defender' ). Also things like 'Alfred Hitchco.ck Presents' and 'Studio One' were multiple performances.

But certainly De Kelley was the most experienced in film and television. Bill of course also had a vast amount of stage and radio experience.

Leonard was definitely a noob in comparison to Bill and De.

They are all superb actors.

I nominate Frank Gorshin, played Bele in "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield".  A very well known actor and stand up comic at the time.  He played the Riddler in the old Batman TV series.  He opened for the Beatles as a comic on their first Sullivan appearance.

We'd certainly seen all of them before---although without realizing it. I was devoted to The Man From Uncle, but since it hasn't been on tv in decades (really, no reruns anywhere), I never had the chance SEE see that episode! And I'd certainly seen Shatner in Twilight Zone and Outer Limits....but only later, after ST premiered, seen Bros K and J at N.
My father from the beginning kept saying that De was a well-known actor---and kept laughing, because Kelley was so type-cast all the time as the heavy, but in ST the opposite! He certainly never tried to research anything, just based it on his memories of watching tv/movies.

That's really interesting that he was kind of playing against type as McCoy (although I'm sure McCoy was closer to how he was as a person). I've only ever seen him in Trek. I shall have to watch some of his westerns to see how different he is.
