I just have to point out Voyager's biggest failing and that is killing off good secondary characters. Hogan's death was just terrible!  Any no name character could have been eaten by the dinosnake!  Watching Lon Suder kill what seems like 10 Kazon in Engineering, knowing he has to do it, but not wanting to, really is well done.  But think if he had lived??  Does Janeway lock him back up in his quarters after playing a VITAL role in recapturing Voyager?  What would Tuvok have to say?  What would the crew do or say, if he had been even temporarily granted access to other parts of the ship as reward for his actions?

Well, the fact that they brought Carey back just to kill him was ridiculous.  I agree, most of the secondary deaths were more about "Who can we kill to show the situation is serious" and not natural outgrowths of the story.

Really the only secondary character getting killed that I thought was horrible was Carey.  He was off the show for god knows how long and they bring him back to simply kill him.
I always thought they missed a couple interesting story lines delving into how the professional relationship between him and Torres would have worked out.  They did this in a lot of the books, but really never did on the TV show.

Hogan really never was that prominent on the show, really the only remember him in Investigation myself.

As for Suder, I think that was the best way to handle his character.  It is not like the crime he committed could be so easy forgotten.  Do you really think that you could work with and forgive and forget someone that brutally murdered one of your shipmates simply because he was in a bad mood?  Some crimes are simply not forgiven.

Suder was handled well. He was redeemed before he died. Hogan wasn't particularly memorable for me so that never bothered me. Carey was ridiculous. There wasn't really any point in bringing him back just do die needlessly.

There remained the problem of even though Suder was redeeming/had redeemed himself, its because he was doing so by going back to his hostile and homicidal ways, that if they did let him survive, there would now be the question of what to do with him after the fact.

His rehabilitation was compromised and now you have a crew member who was instrumental in saving the ship and crew who did so using acts that forced that crew to incarcerate and isolate him previously. Continued incarceration would hardly be a reward for saving them, and because he obviously still has a capability to commit heinous acts, you certanly cant let him just run around free.

For the continued good of te show, there really was no other option for the character.

Having Suder alive on the ship after "Basics" could actually have been interesting. We would have had Janeway facing a difficult dilemma. Suder was convicted for murder, still he was the one to save the ship. Now, how should he be treated after that?

Hogan's death felt a bit unnecessary and I could never understand why they brought back Carey after a lengthy absence just to kill him off.

If Suder had survived "Basics" would have made room for lots of Tuvok/Suder plots and subplots. No great loss in my opinion. It was so early in the series they were just trying to get their bearings and didn't know what to do with the extra character.

Sudor would have been nice to keep around, but I dont think he could have been kept as a regular for long for a couple of reasons...

1. is the reason I gave earlier.
2. Wasnt he shooting for Grima Wormtongue in LOTR around that time?

also, brad dourif may have been tough to get to reprise his role with any regularity, if at all.
