You people DO know there won't be a new TV series?

I am constantly amazed to see good posters on this board discuss a potential new TV series based on the success of this newest film...

You DO know that there is no way these actors/producers/directors/etc... are ever going to, or back to, television, don't you?  Specifically, if for no other reason, THAN the success of this newest movie.  Especially considering the simple fact that all the actors are signed-on for two more films.  After which they'll be even bigger movie stars.

I just find it curious that anyone includes any potential for a TV series in their posts here at all...So much so that I felt the need to make this post.  Surely, no one disagrees?

It is my impression that posters who discuss a potential new tv series visualize it happening after the three movies and most likely with some other ship or crew.

I think if you've been paying attention that you would know that when people talk about a new series they don't mean with these actors or crew, unless you have specifically seen someone state otherwise?
Everyone knows that the movie and TV rights are not compatible.

So you're saying those who do discuss this potential new TV series just breeze over the fact that there will be yet another new set of James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Bones, and the rest of the gang??

I have not seen this addressed once on here...Ever.  There was so much discussion concerning this current new set of actors that a 3rd set would light this place on fire.  I've not even seen a spark.

I would like to see Star Trek stick with movies for a while.

It was discussed on here much before and also CBS and Paramount do not share the same rights. From what I read there will be no new tv series until after the movies and the new tv series would not be the same crew and characters from the new movies. That could be wrong but it is the impression I have.

No, everyone (to my knowlege) that wants to see a new TV series expects that it will be set in a different time period, and indeed a different timeline, as the rights for the movies and TV shows are owned by different companys.

Not strictly true. CBS owns the TV and movie rights Paramount has a licence from CBS to produce 3 movies based on Trek. After that CBS could let Paramount renew the licence, or make its own movies or licence them to Universal or Sony or any other studio.

Actualy, a new TV series will be ¿based on the advice of the CBS Bean counters. ¿Based only on if they think it will bring in the cash. It will have nothing to do with "Fans" day dreams.

If we think back, creating and producing ENT burned Paramount big time.

Trying to hold a Trek as the flagship show of UPN was one of the biggest mistakes they made. Trek doesn't have that kind of appeal and shouldn't have been treated as such. That's why TNG and DS9 had it easy because they didn't have to live up to a certain standard or try to go up against other prime time broadcasting. That's why Roddenberry wisely chose to go with syndication because with that way they wouldn't have a prime time studio like NBC calling all the shots on how to do their shows.

So if there is ever going to be a new Trek series, the best place for it is something like the Sci-Fi Channel. Do I expect a TV series now? No. But it's the best format that Trek was designed for and I hope some day Paramount will decided to create one, whether it's a spin-off of the new film or a continuation of the original timeline.

Very unlikely that they would make a series about Kirk and co, Rack_of_TPol gives good reasons why this won't happen, and using another set of actors would be crazy.

I'm happy to let the movies continue so long as they're good, and to have a new series set around the 25th century in a few years time.

How about something based on Trek in the 31st century.

Maybe something that is based on being exactly 1000 years into the future?  Lot's of stuff to cover with that.

Or, how about "Star Trek - Enemy".

Year to be determined, but based on the Federation's enemies and Starfleet's struggle therein.

Two totally different concepts with sets and crew an open book.

Paramounts/CBS main interest -> $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Mission to achieve: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ = Create new products

Plan to create new products: New shows/movies to sell them to TV, DVD, Bluray, Cinema; to sell rights for uniforms, toys, soundtracks, replicas, Burger King, McDonalds...

And let's not forget:

- Movies = Paramount
- Shows = CBS

At least when the STAR WARS live-action shows goes on air in 2011, CBS will come up with a new TREK show...
That's what happened after 1977... this time, it's for the small screen.
