One thing I've wondered about is how the course of the Trek franchise would've been affected if Phase II had been made instead of the movies, if there would've been more Trek series after that or if that would've been it. I wonder about the latter idea because I wonder whether after a second series with the original cast people might not have thought Trek had run its course, that it might have exhausted the public's appetite for Trek so there wouldn't have been an opportunity for a totally new series like TNG. Of course, maybe it wouldn't have affected that at all. What do you think?

If there had been any effect at all, then it probably would have been a continued greater dependence of the Franchise on the original series crew.
One thing that the success of TNG did for Star Trek was to confirm that introducing a new set of characters was feasible, even one might say, desirable.
The other possibility was that later series of Trek may have been set earlier than those that did follow (apart of course from Enterprise). 24th Century Trek may still have happened, but it could have been different to how it turned out -- and might have happened later. Or even been set earlier too. Like, "next phase" instead of "next gen" era.
Of course that's just random speculation that has been dreamed up in the five to ten minutes or so I took to type this post. ^_^

I don't know the movies were great but phase II would've been more in depth exploration of the characters and other plots. I mean the movies had a huge gap between them like what happened in between STTMP and ST II or ST V and ST VI. ???
