NEWS WE CAN USE! (or maybe not)

The Channel Formerly Known as the Sci-Fi Channel will be airing its annoying (to me, at least) "31 Days of Halloween" beginning on Thursday, 1 October 2009, interrupting their regular scheduling which includes Enterprise, TNG, and Stargate: Atlantis repeats, and will continue in that vein (pun not intended! ) for the entire month of October.

The Channel Formerly Known as the Sci-Fi Channel (a.k.a "Sy-Fy") is on most expanded basic cable and satellite packages; check your local guide to find it, and remember time zones and Daylight Savings adjustments in your area.

If I find a mailing address to whatever corporate entity owns the Channel Formerly Known as the Sci-Fi Channel (a.k.a "Sy-Fy") this year, I'll post it here so we can write and tell them what we like (ENT) and hate ("Caw", etc.) to help them in future programming.

Sy-Fy has got the weirdest identity crisis. I just thank goodness for the DVDs, because you never know what they are going to do.

Yep, I own all five complete series of Trek (I consider TAS as being TOS Season IV, so TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT), and all the Stargate series SG-1 and Atlantis DVDs.  So I can rely on those.  I trust that TNG will still be on at 1 AM on WGN, and VOY at 3 AM on Spike for a few days a week, even tho I may not be awake to watch those.

I still can't get over the fact they are calling themselves "Sy-Fy" now. My view is that they were dumbing it down to appeal to a wider audience.

They don't seem to know if they want to be a joke channel with the grade D movies & wrestling, or be a serious venue for Sci Fi with BSG reboots and the cyber-punk projects like Tin Man and Alice or be the place for reruns of classic shows. . .The latter two cohere, but I am not sure about the former. I do know those bad 'good' movies are profitable for them.

So, why can't there have been a SciFi2 and SciFi3 like there is ESPN2?  The original could be for STAR TREK, Stargate, BSG, Babylon 5, Sliders, ETC, ETC.  Sci-Fi3 could run all the B movies and Wrestling.  Wrestling???? WTF?? What does that have to do with Sci-Fi??  Ghost Hunters would also be on the main channel,  and all the old classic Sci-Fi, Buck Rogers, Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, would be on Sci-Fi2....

...I think wrestling is a spin-off reality series from The Island of Doctor Moreau; DNA experiments and testosterone poisoning...

If the number of folks watching were high enough... they are not, so we get one.

Their EXPECTATIONS (and/or advertising costs) are too high. Statistics show that even a well-liked show can't make it anymore; it's all about shuffling a mysterious set of numbers, and year after year we lose shows that 20 years ago would have been considered "hits".

So, they get cancelled and replaced with an endless go-round of new and crappier crap. More cheaply produced 'cause they know how little chance they stand, then it starts all over, and TV quality sinks lower.

...ah... then let me give you another literary reference... I think television programming is now in the hands of the Morlocks, or the Eloi, or possibly both: but which of them is worse, I ask you? If you're wondering, the novel is "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells; the classic version is the 1960 (?) George Pal production.

...you know you've been reading fanfic for too long when you instantly envision Mal Eloi and Trip Morlock as friends, in less than 30 seconds... ooh, yesyesyes!! Dibs, I have dibs!

Hi Redshirt. Many of us have the DVD's. But I get a kick out of people--who know I'm a Trek fan--telling me they caught an episode of ENT the other day and--usually--how much they liked it.

I've sort of been ticking off the new ENT fans I've either brought in or heard about the last couple years. Great fun.
