is it just me or do trekies almost universally hate star wars, and warsies hate trek? Ever notice how warsies like to exagerate everything to the max while trekies want to ignore real life evidence? Am I the only one who sees this sort of thing?

No, its just the more serious fans that tend to call definate lines between the two. Warsies tend to worship SW to the extent that its the best thing ever in some cases. I don't know about Trekkies denying real life evidence, thats a good question...

Ha, just the other day, while at the shopping mall, I purchased a Star Trek book and a Star Wars T shirt, and carried them in the same bag. I imagined a little war going on inside the bag. But I think the book and T-shirt kinda sums up how I feel about it. Trek is obviously more intellectual, thus I consider it to be more Sci-Fi than Star Wars is. Star Wars is more action packed and more fantastical than Trek, thus I consider it to be action/adventure/fantasy. Either way, I love them both. (Trek just a bit more though. shhhh)

I think Star Wars is fantasy too -- with a Space Opera flavour. It's a lot more based in epic and mythical archetypes etc, and more similar to folklore.
In any case I know there are those who go for the "love one hate the other" option, but I and most of my university friends really like them both.
In fact, while I was at uni my friends were doing a Star Wars based fan-film which was kind of fun to join in for a scene or so. ^_^ I mean they were some seriously obsessed warsies, my mates. But we also watched lots of Trek as well. And other sci-fi of course.
Another thought I just had, it must be possible to like both Star Trek and Star Wars because otherwise there wouldn't be any Trek / Wars crossover fanfics.

Don't tempt fate. Or do you want to see him in a golden bikini and collar lounging / reclining against the immensity of Jabba the Hutt?

I think the warsies/trekkie thing is exaggerated a bit. YOu get a few really nutty Warsies like Darth Servo, but honestly, most of them are pretty sensible. The thing about Star Wars is that if you took out the special effects, it just wouldn't be that good. Visually, they are great movies, a real treat for the eyes. Yes, even Phantom Menace! In terms of plot and character, they are just awful, and you get the feeling Lucas was just winging it on the whole "Saga" element. (Wow, Leia just HAPPENS to be Lukes' sister, which resolves the whole love triangle thing nicely. Well, other than the icky open mouth kissing parts, I guess that works!

Yeah you already said. I would have to disagree with such as Roman Lion about the Plot. Okay the last few movies didn't quite make the standard of the first three, plot-wise. But these days the FX on the first three movies are great for their time but not 21st century standard -- and the plot still works really well. Some might argue for example that the dialogue is a little stilted. Possibly true. But Star Wars is based on epic. Have you read any Odyssey or Iliad, or even Lord of the Rings. Not exactly natural speech -- but it works. In the case of Star Wars too, I think the dialogue works for what it is. It's just that film audiences especially now have very different expectations. And epic-style dialogue is not among those expectations. As for the storyline over all, it was good enough for people to love this movie when it first came out -- and good enough for such eminent scholars as Joseph Campbell (on whose work Star Wars was partially based, I hear) to enjoy talking about it for an entire book-length interview. It's simply based upon a very different storytelling tradition to that of Star Trek. Besides which "a plot as old as storytelling" is, as far as I'm concerned, a good thing. Incidentally my undergrad. degree was specialising in Classical Mythology, as well as English lit. and Creative Writing - among other things - so that's pretty much where I'm coming from here. And anyway if you get right down to it, every story is "as old as storytelling". (i think I might have mentioned so before in other threads.) Nobody gets away from the old themes and archetypes, because nobody CAN. And honestly I think the mythical base of several better fantasy stories is what gives them their depth. Or would you condemn Lord of the Rings as well for having such a plot -- because I tell you now if Luke Skywalker's story is really old, I guarantee you that Frodo's is as well.
