Sorry about the basic poll that's probably been done. I haven't seen it.

How would you compare it to First Contact theatrics?

In my opinion this movie had the best special effects of any Star Trek movie and a pretty riveting story.

The movies has a shot for TV look about it and the script is a contrived disaster. There is faux action with improper use of Bourne-film style shaky camera and jump/fast cut editing work and it can be hard to keep the geography of things in place during the fights which always seem to have a forced tension from Kirk always ending up hanging off of something.

The science is abysmal and they don't even use it wrong consistently. They don't use the stuff they knew they made up consistently.

The villain seemed to be MIA for twenty-five years despite being set on genocide.

But it's fast paced and moves quickly between action scenes, people in their skivvies, slapstick humor, zingers and bigger action scenes and special effects shots and an undressed contemporary brewery serving as the futuristic engine room of an advanced interstellar starship.

Depending on your capacity for giving film-makers "It's a movie cards" and whether or not you're okay with Spock's typical use of logic being to justify an emotional outburst, and how much pretty CGI turns your head, you may enjoy yourself immensely and have a terrific time and be able to say 'I LIKED IT!'

They really didn't rely that much on science and what they did use was TREK science, not real science. Clearly you know more about it than their consultant from JPL does   :eyesroll:  :eyesroll:

Other than the brewery, the rest of it was fine.

Well the FACT is 90% of TREK fans loved this movie immensely. So your contrived excuses for not liking the movie are quite frankly irrelivant.

It seems the only fans that didn't like this movie are the ones from Germany. It's no secret they prefer the TNG era and openly don't accept TOS as being TREK.

When did Germany pick up and move to the states? Did they follow David Hasselhoff back?

Well I really enjoyed the film at the cinema, but that was BEFORE I'd seen TOS.

Now that I've got TOS to compare it to (and I know it's an 'alternate universe' and I shouldn't compare them and all that) I find that I like STXI that little bit less.

But...now that I've seen TMP which is serious and artistic and touching and beautiful and deep...well, I can't help but see STXI as pure popcorn entertainment.

...which there's nothing wrong with, but for me it's worlds away from the standard of TMP.

It was great. :) but should also be taken in context as a stepping stone from TOS to the next couple of movies.

Yes, TMP and TREK XI are two entirely different kinds of movies. I wouldn't call TREK XI popcorn entertainment by any means. It's just a reflection of where TREK stood when both of these movies were made. With TMP you had almost the entire fanbase waiting for more TREK. Now with TREK XI  its rebuilding TREK to greatness slowly but surely. TREK XI had the task of reintroducing TREK to the masses and is a character introduction film.

As I always say TREK XI is the worst of the best & the best of the worst.

It was a good movie but mediocre Star Trek.
