I'd like to know what you guys think are the ABSOLUTE BEST episodes of DS9. I'm not asking you to pick your personal favourites (although they can be)...but I'm asking you to pick the best based on these criteria...

1. Fantastic episodic televison (worthy of any classic tv - a la the last episode of M.A.S.H. or the walnut episode of Dick Van ####, J.R.'s shooting on Dallas, etc. You know what I mean)

2. Fantastic "Star Trek" (like "City On Edge Of Forever", "The Inner Light", etc.)

3. Fantastic writing/acting

Yes...I use the word "fantastic" too much. Anywho...just interested in your opinions. Haven't seen too much of DS9 yet. Just the first couple of seasons and a handful of episodes from later years. I really think "Duet" is the strongest episode from year one. Incredible acting and solid writing. Not sure if it's great "Star Trek" yet but it's my closest choice so far in my limited viewings.

Go for it!!!

LOL! Just saw that they edited out the last part of Dick's last name in my original post. Too funny. That's how it's spelled, though.

As far as DS9, I'd say "The Visitor". Not my favorite, but think it's a good story.

It's going to end up on here eventually so let me go ahead and say "In the Pale Moonlight." (And yes, it's one of my favorites.)

And in addition to "The Visitor" and "In the Pale Moonlight?" Let me also add "Far Beyond the Stars" (another favorite).

So that's two more. I'll let someone else continue adding links to the chain...

Well that's a tricky one to say because "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" and "Inquisition" are my two favourite episodes and a major part of the reason WHY they are my two favourite episodes is BECAUSE of the writing / story / direction / drama / etc....

So i think I'll still have to go with those.

Another one that is often kind of overlooked and underrated: "Whispers."

I thought "In the Pale Moonlight" was good, but that having been said, I couldn't get into Sisko's speech at all it was kind of wooden and again good, but not brilliant. What made that episode a good one was more the supporting characters especially Garak, and also Vreenak and Tolar -- and Quark and Bashir. And the story was good etc. Great episode. But still, even on that same disc, "Inquisition" was better (for me) and even for monologues -- Silarin Prin in "The Darkness and the Light" had a heaps better monologue than Sisko's.

"The Visitor" to me was fairly mediocre. For what it was, the writing etc was good. But it's one that I skip. The aging makeup on Tony Todd was severely dodgy. And I still say that Melanie is creepy.

I mean yeah there are some dodgy episodes that I would still rank in my top ten faves but that's not what it's all about.

Duet transcends the sci-fi genre and can, therefore, be considered one of the best. :logical:

"Duet" was a great episode.

I think there's something to be said for both those stories which are more than, and those which are great examples of, science fiction.

Not sure that "transcending the genre" alone is enough to make an episode one of the best. But "Duet" had a lot going for it especially in the writing, in what it meant for the development of Bajor, and in the contribution of the two main actors.

I think "transcending genre" makes episodes great because they then open the franchise up to a wider audience. Possibly... I don't know...

I also have to agree that "In the Pale Moonlight" and "Far Beyond the Stars" are great.

To add to these two gems, I submit "His Way" (the Kira/Odo hook-up) and "Captive Pursuit" (featuring Tosk 'the hunted';).

Tosk. Is. Awesum.

There are times when I can understand people's opinions and all but anyone who hates Tosk just doesn't Get It, far as I'm concerned!
