I hear from time to time that people thought Bacula sucked as Archer.  Why do people think that?  1.  Who could have done better?  2.  I actually think he was good, anyone remember Quantum Leaps? [sucks really?]

I think Bakula rocked, and NAILED that character. 3-dimensional, consistent, interesting, natural and complex. You don't have to go very far in other threads to find supporting evidence from myself and others of this fact. So, yeh, let's see if the critics can be just as detailed.

I am in the middle on this subject, I think Bacula did a good job, but I would not call it great.  Sometimes he was outstanding, but other times it seemed his emotional scenes were overdone, sometimes I felt he showed anger were I did not think it felt appropriate.  Mind you I do not know if that was his fault or the writer/directors fault.

But on the whole I think he did a good job and does not deserve some of the criticism he receives.

Well if my MOTHER who is 62 and likes TREK almost as much as I do says Bacula can't act worth a ####.(I haven't shared my opinion on his act with her ever) Then it has to be true. Archer as a character is interesting enough, yet I have to admit the acting on Bacula's part is pretty piss poor.

Anyone who has read any of my posts knows how I feel about Bakula and how he played Archer. He carried all of Archer's emotional depth. Bakula is a fantastic reaction actor. Watch his face and you can see how he feels and thinks about what is being said and done around him. Look into his eyes and you can see him thinking. It was because of Bakula that I could believe the changes that happened to Archer over the four years and that made them so touching.

I liked Bakula from the Quantum Leap days, and was pleased when he got the part. Some of the other cast members were kinda ropey, but Scott was great.

Archer moments called "wooden" or awkward public speaking were quite clearly just that: this was how ARCHER was supposed to be at that moment. In other situations where the character Archer would be natural, intense, all-focused on one emotion--Bakula was right there as well. Presence and unity of character.

Why does your 62 year old mother's opinion = truth? :D

(No insult meant to your mother.)

Well my mother has NEVER lied to me personally.

As I said it's bakula's acting that's lacking not the Archer character itself.

I was just reading Memory Alpha's notes on various ENT episodes.  For Strange New World the creators were originally planning to have Novakovich die from his injuries.  Bakula thought it wouldn't be right to do that without dealing with the loss in some sort of way.  I think this example shows just how thoughtful the actor was, and I'm glad he was able to have some level of input into the stories.

(Because if I told you what my 69-year-old mother thinks of acting in TOS in comparison with ENT, you'd accuse me of bashing again.)

Poor Scott Bakula - two great Sci Fi series - marked by two of the most *screw you fans* finales in the history of the genre! *sigh*
