Would you die for personal glory?

Okay first of all, I am not -- absolutely not -- advocating the "let's all turn into lemmings" position here.

I was watching DS9 "The Muse" the other day. Not the greatest episode but I was interested at the time that Jake was prepared to die, or at least that Onaya was willing to cause his death, for his chance to write something great.

Also I am reminded of the myth of Achilles. Which is that when it was predicted that Achilles would either die a glorious death in battle or live out many years in contentment and prosperity -- but get no glory from his life -- he chose to go to Troy where of course he died. Even though his parents were even willing to disguise him as a woman and send him away in order to prevent such an occurrence.

And there are of course other instances in literature and true stories. So what do you think? Given the choice between success in your chosen field and a short life, or a long, albeit contented but relatively obscure life, what do you think you would choose?

Today is a good day to die.

I'd rather be remembered a hero than forgotten.

I would have to be saving lives when I died.

Got to be worth the sacrifice, but personal honor is secondary to saving lives.

EXACTLY what I was thinking.

"No greater love hath a man, than he will lay down his life for another".

If I were to be remembered vs. forgotten; I'd rather be remembered for saving someone's life vs. safeguarding my own.

The 'glory' is in service to others. Not to oneself.

It's a rare thing when we can agree on some things without question.

Today is that day.

It's a matter of how I was raised as much as my training in the service.

I will not lie down. I will not go quietly.

I'd kill and die for any of my friends, most of my family, or (especially) a girl, but not for myself.

I guess I shouldn't mention that that "greater love" quote is from the Bible, huh?

Oops, too late!

Now the Yeti will get me.

I would only sacrifice myself if it meant saving the lives of others - preferably a lot of others.

If I'm remembered, good.  If not, that's fine too.

Agreed.  Not for personal glory or recognition but for making some lasting and meaningful change that would be a worthy trade of the years I had left.  Otherwise, quiet, peaceful obscurity doing my part to make things better is just fine with me.  :)

Unless family was involved I would be quite happy to live in obscurity.

You're doing a lovely job of it.  Who are you again?  :p
