lets say that that happened in this day and age, and this computer hacker punk kid, one year into the Navel acadomy, finds out that Bin Ladin is getting ready to launch another terrorist attack, this time he is attacking the United Nations (big loss there, lol). He warns the proper authorities and they are able to stop the suicide bomber that has been charged with the attack, and he gives away Bin Ladins main headquarters, we go there, capture/kill him and put his organization out of business forever.

Basically this punk computer hacker has saved the entire planet from future terrorist attacks by Al kida (i might have murdered that one, oh well), would you feel safe if they gave this kid command of a nucular sub, or even and aircraft carrier, both fresh out of the shipyards, over men that are far more experienced and disaplined then this kid?

Prime spock briefed starfleet. that's breaking the rules.

Where and when does this happen tribblenator?

Right, I can see what your saying but it's not exactly the same thing. The kid may have stumbled across information that saved lives, but he passed it to others who took action, also he's just a first year cadet. Kirk acted above and and beyond the call of duty to save Earth by himself (and the Enterprise) Kirk had already been promoted at various stages by Pike who seemed determined that Kirk not only joined SF but was given the chance to command ASAP.

I'd also add that if he was a Hacker to begin with, the chances are he wouldn't be the type to command a ship or sub anyway.

If you can read this it means I've got something to work on here.

Ok fair enough, but lets take out the part that his superiors bleieved him and he had to take action on his own. and like Kirk he had a rather interestin history. what about then would you still say the same thing?

I just don't think it's the same thing, Pike is the key here, and the field commission, to be honest it kinda reminds me of Starship Troopers when Johnny Rico gets field promotions after key officers are killed. He had Lt. Rasczak "looking after him"

Yeah I didn't see the double post, I think it's because this site keeps logging me off.

Never watch that movie, though i have seen enough of it to come to the conclution that i didn't miss much by not watching it. Anyway lets just agree to disagree on this point and be done with it, agreed?
