I think I may or may not have asked this. Did the TOS crew get a better deal in the prime or new timeline. For example Kirk getting a brand new ship to command instead of a 20 year old ship. Spock getting uhura. Etc. etc.

Hard to tell from just one movie in the new timeline so far...

:logical:

man I thought no one would respond to this topic.

Well I'm asking this is when I watched the movie 2-3 more times I noticed that in the new timeline some characters have better deals than in the prime timeline. For example pike not being a vegetable like in the prime timeline.  Sulu not starting off as a physicist.  Or chekov being the 1st navigator for the ship in stead of lasalle's, bailey, those other 2 navigators that came before replacement. I do notice some characters have it worse like scotty who had to serve on delta vega or mccoy losing his property in the divorce. etc.

McCoy had lost eveything in his divorce in the original timeline as well...was his whole reason for joining Starfleet.

Sulu and Chekov? They had broader backgrounds in the original timeline.

:logical:

Really mccoy joined starfleet in the prime timeline because he lost everything in the divorce? I thought he genuinely loved medicine?  Sulu and Chekov had more broad backgrounds elaborate on that.

Well I can tell you Kirk is better off career wise since he is now captain a full 8 years earlier than in the original timeline. Even Spock was a Lt. Cmdr up until WNMHGB which was 2265. Spock is a full commander by 2258 in our new timeline.

Chekov is far better off getting his career of to a great early start. Also somehow being born four years earlier as well. Maybe Chekov's parents are former Q or aliens that lived in a time stream from Voyagers "Non Sequitur" LOL

Uhura definitely has it better with more and better lines of dialogue. LOL

Chekov is actually useful, instead of screaming all the time. ¿His parents must've been on the kelvin.

Kirk and Spock get a brand new ship and 6 more years of missions.

McCoy already was a Doctor when he joined Starfleet according to popular fanon. His divorce had always been part of the backstory that Roddenberry (or maybe Coon or Fontana) had developed for him. His desire to just get away from the bad things that had happened in his life steered him to sign up.

Sulu as we saw in TOS had experience as a mathematician, and had numerous hobbies that enriched his character's background. In the movie, Sulu doesn't even know enough to take the "parking brake" off.

In order to compensate for using the character earlier in the new timeline, Chekov is a 17 year old whiz kid. Please Ghu he doesn't become another Wesley Crusher. The original Chekov was 22, an Academy graduate, and while obviously highly intelligent to be such a great navigator right out of the Academy, did not rely on being a whiz kid to succeed.

:logical:

Oh yeah new sulu is a clutz. LOL

However the new chekov gets to tag along with kirk from the start instead of being on half of the 5 year mission.

Spock got to make out with the new younger/hotter Uhura, so I'd say he's doing better in the new universe!  :D

Well, in this case, I think that the quality of the bonds between the characters may benefit from added years of being together, though noone can question the loyalty and quality of love shared by this group as we later saw. This does give them a bit more experience in deep space, coming ten years prior as a 'family'. I think that Kirk, knowing what he does about the Romulans via Nero, has a different worldview than before-he knows what could happen to this Romulus, perhaps, as does Spock. As for their relationship, I think that time will only deepen the bond there, and they become 'brothers' a little sooner, perhaps, and McCoy and Jim are already off to a great start, as here, he preceded Spock. I also see, as cited by me elsewhere, him having a handy ally and friend for certain in Chris Pike that wasn't really portrayed in a direct manner in the series, if I am not mistaken. Jim in the PU was never a big fan always of 'the brass', and sometimes the reverse. Here, he has ready ear. In fact, Pike is the father now that Jim lost. He deeply believs in him. But a huge negative for say Spock, is that he has lost his mother...who accepts, and understands him better than any living soul. That, I can relate to. Yet, in this circumstance, Spock's relationship with Sarek I belive will take on a whole new path, as they have lost their world, and this, with Amanda's death, will deepen their relationship. Imagine how badly 'our' Spock must want to see, and be near his father..but, in his younger self, realizes that he can in a sense have what he did not before. I do wonder if Jim's bond with his mother might be different than before,  stronger, and after him maturing and shaped by what happens in the course of the film. We really don't know what their relationship was like when he was a child, but we could make guesses. And of course Chris Pike himslef may very well avoid the fate he suffered prior to ''The Menagerie''. My strong feeling is that he will.

To be honest i think that the crew in the new universe is just to cocky and arrogant, with the exception of Bones. They lack the seasoning and experience that the Prime Universe characters had. besides there is no way that anyone in thier right mind would turn over command of a brand new starship to a wet behind the ears former farmboy with a history of getting into barfights with people twice his size.

Oh and tribblenator not everyone got off better because of Nero, Kirk the one man that helped to shape his life more then any other, his father.
