Is TVH the most dated Trek film?

Yeah, I watched TVH recently and found it to be the most dated Trek film by far, do to it being set in the 1980's. Also, I found the music to be horrible and out of place for a Trek film. Horner was sorely missed.

I'm all for saving the whales, but I felt it was a pretty weak story. The story hasn't aged too well. It was too preachy and heavy handed even. TWOK, for instance, seems timeless to me. You can watch it 50 years from now and it will still hold up well. I didn't find TVH held up that well over the years.

I thought it was bold for Nimoy and co to have no real villain in the story though. It was just too much comedy for me though.

And, Catherine Hicks gets on my nerves!

The fact that it is the 80's and our obsession with whales are the only things that date this movie.  The drama, humor and acting is timeless.

If it's dated at all, it's because they had to go back in time to some specific date.

Personally, it doesn't look that dated to me.  Other than the old Mac and maybe a couple of other things, i.e no one walking on the street on their cellphones.  And, hell, so what if its the 80s?  Would the film have been signicantly different if it had been set in the 90s or 00s?  I don't think so.  San Francisco looks pretty much the same.

I thought the story was great.  With Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett collaborating, it turned out to be a great script.  It was wild crazy ride.  I don't think it was anymore "preachy" than a lot of other ST episodes.  Maybe it's the most "preachy" of the movies.  I can understand that.

Yeah, it was bold for Nimoy to switch gears so dramatically for TVH.  He had to really fight Paramount to do that film.  They wanted another film in the vein of TWOK and TSFS and doing the lighter, humor-filled story that Nimoy wanted to do concerned them.  Nimoy was ultimately vindicated by TVH's box office success.  It truly went beyond the fanbase.  People really responded to the humor, which arose naturally from the characters.  It's my second-favorite ST film, right after TWOK.

I also thought the score, by veteran composer Leonard Rosenman (of Rebel Without a Cause fame), was great.  Yes, it was lighter, but it really holds up well all by itself with a great march (including bell tones from the brass section), a wonderful, lyrical theme for the whales and a couple of great dances in the vein of Dvorak for "Chekov's Run" and the "Hospital Chase."  That score was nominated for an academy award.

I have to say, despite TMP being my favorite, I think it looks the most dated out of the bunch. But, I think more movies being made today look dated than anything in the Trek movies. The most recent example is Abrams' Galaxy Quest 2.

The past couple years have been the iphone, but that'll change really soon, because tech comes and goes. Look at how many competitors have already come out with their version of it.

Yes 3 or 4 and they all lack some of the features or performance of the iphone.... If you switch you will wish you never had

I'm happy with my flip phone, because all I want to do is answer a call like Captain Kirk.

But the thing is any movie can be placed within 5 years from when it was made.

Some more so than others. And I picked Abrams' movie only because it was the one off the top of my head, so I'll jump in fast and say I'm not trying to start an argument over it. But it seems now instead of tomorrow.
