Hello,
¿ ¿ ¿ I am a student taking a beginning Anthropology class and I have to do an assignment on Identity Groups. Identity groups are groups of people who come together based on some part of their identity (ie: culture, race, common interests, etc). I thought it would be fun to study Star Trek fans as an Identity Group and was hoping that you would let me participate with people on the message boards to gain information about what it means to be a fan of Star Trek.

¿ ¿ If you have time could you possibly send back your own answers to some of these simple questions? There are no wrong answers to these questions, and hopefully you will have fun filling some of them out.

1)What made you a Star Trek fan?

2)Describe your first experiences with being a fan of Star Trek?
¿ -How were you introduced to Star Trek?

3)What do you like to be called?
¿ ¿-A Trekkie, a Trekker, a Star Trek Fan or something else entirely?

4)What makes someone a "true" Star Trek fan?
¿ -Are there any behaviors that are unanimously unacceptable to the group?
¿ -Can you be a Star Wars fan AND a Star Trek fan?
¿ -Do you own a lot of memorabilia and if so what?
¿ -Do you attend conventions?
¿ -Have you met any of the actors?
¿ -Do you role play frequently? If so what or how do you role play?

5)What do you like most about being a fan of Star Trek?
¿ -Do you like the shows(if so which show), the movies, the actors, the optimistic ideology?
¿ -Who is your favorite Star Trek Character?
¿ -Which is your favorite TV show?
¿ -Which is your favorite movie?
¿ -What are your favorite types of characters from Star Trek (ie Klingons, Vulcans, Humans, Romulans, etc)

6)What makes a Trekkie a Trekkie? Or if you are a Trekker, how do you know you are a Trekker?
¿ -For example, Jeff Foxworthy does a comedy routine that starts "You Might Be A Redneck" How do you know "You Might Be a Star Trek Fan?"

7)Are there different kinds of Star Trek Fans? Which kind are you?

8)What are some of the more technical areas of Star Trek that you like to talk about with your friends?
¿ ie: Space/Warp Travel, The Future, Alien Civilizations, etc.

9)If you had to introduce someone new to the Star Trek community what would you tell them about/introduce them to?
¿ If your little brother/sister or son/daughter wanted to join the Star Trek community would you encourage them? How would you do it?
¿ What would you teach them about?

10)How is it different to be a woman or a man if you are a Star Trek fan? Are there different expectations on fans based on their gender or previous background or is the Star Trek fan community a place where there are no expectations based on things like gender?

Thanks again for any input you could give.

1. I like space.

2. I was introduced to trek when I saw a episode of TNG back in 1995-96. I liked it and got hooked.

3. Trekkie or trekker it don't matter.

4. A true trek fan never stops believing in trek and can still like other sci-fi franchises but trek is #1.
-I don't attend conventions now.
-I never met any of the stars.
-I don't role play but I do like to read the books and pretend I'm acting out the sequences.
-I own some memorabilia.

5. I like all shows and movies. I like the idea.
- Captain Kirk
-TOS
-Trek XI
-Vulcans and klingons

6. You know you're a trek fan when you look forward to watching a trek episode or movie.

7. there are hardcore trek fans, casual trek fans, and in between (like me)

8. none. I just talk about the merits of the characters and the ships compared to other sci-fi ships/tech. I don't exactly know in depth of the tech in trek.

9. no comment

10. it doesn't matter.

Thanks again for any input you could give.

1. Watching Star Trek TNG with my Dad, if I was lucky, close to my bed time.  The hope it holds, the understanding it creates, the honor of life.

2.same as 1.

3. I prefer Trekkie, as Trekker sounds like someone who's trekkin(like a hiker).  or a Star Trek fan.

4. Always try to understand and respect things you might not understand initially.
any behavior most groups would consider bad.
yes I love a lot of Sci-Fi, and I'm just as much a Dune( book series) fan as Star Trek
some. 3-D chess, TNG regular chess, couple figurines(were gifts), some shirts, All the tv shows on DVD, movies.
not yet
I work with Randy James(IMDB.com), otherwise no.
never done that

5. The hope for humanity, of peace, humans overcoming our minor differences
yes. DS9 is favorite, otherwise all, Star Trek IV is my fav, but I like all really, though 1, 5, and 10 are at the bottom.
Garek I really like
I like Vulcans, Klingons, Cardassians, Humans, Changelings, Species 8472, Horta, Vorta, most species really, but not all, I doni't really like the Pakleds, the Vidiians, the Kazon.

6. Someone who likes Star Trek, and if you want to be called it or not.

7. I love Star Trek, I try to be the human of that era.

8.Don't really care to much about the technical, I like the more socially evolved aspect.

9. I'd watch Star Trek with them and talk about the episode.
just have them watch the show and if they like they like it if they don't they don't.  About being kind, caring, understanding and respectful.

10. I don't know
