Let's see... what do you suppose would be a controversial statement on here. (Lie through your teeth if you want to.)

Such as,
Move Along Home was the best episode EVA!!

Here's a somewhat controversial topic starter...

With the exception of OtakuJo, why is it women tend to find TOS, TNG, and VOY more favorable than DS9? Even among those who've watched all seven seasons of DS9?

On the flipside, it seems us gents who've actually managed to catch all seven seasons tend to find DS9 more favorable than TNG and VOY (although not necessarily TOS).

Is it because men are more attracted to the life-and-death struggle for survival on DS9? The politics involved? The space battles? The moral complexities? The realistic characterizations? The war?

Are TNG and VOY more popular with women because the characters are more friendly and happy? And the men more "harmless?" Or is it the fact the primary sets - TNG and VOY's bridges and dining areas - are more like one's own brightly-lit living room and dining room? (Whereas DS9's ops center is much more chaotic and Quark's bar is ... well, a bar?)

Apparently Sid's Bashir is a draw to women. (Just look at our only other female posters around here.) But regardless of Visitor's Kira being an empowering character, DS9 seems to really only appeal to men. Or at least, that's been my view.

So is DS9 really a "guy show?"

Am I right? Or wrong? And why?

Hi zarak. Welcome to the DS9 Boards. I am trekkie who loves DS9. I grew up with Star Trek (The original series, watching reruns in the 70's to present ), and it was my first love as a Star Trek series. I like TNG, Voy and ENT too. Besides TOS, DS9 had more action for me. I love what Mr. Spock calls "Cowboy diplomacy". I like Sisko's command style and love the Defiant. I feel like Worf does when Riker calls the Defiant one tough little ship and Worf looks at Riker and says "little"?

Back on topic. Is DS9 a guy show? I do not think that it started that way, but it could be.

There are some definite "guy" episodes, but I think there are some definite "gal" episodes as well.

Hi Commander....yes, I agree with you, there are some "girly" episodes, but in general there's a lot of action...as well as politics and deep moments...I think in DS9 the characters are more "360¿" described...not only a simple "villain" or a "hero", Commander Sisko is a man full of doubt himself...

Oh, it's time for the Original series!

It's on TV in Italy right now, the remastered episodes....I've been in love with Spock ¿since I was a child (always fell in love with aliens.... ¿ !!!!       )

I don't think DS9 was a guy show I just think people were intimadated with the women who were on it.  Both Jadzia and Kira were very strong women.  You can't really count Kaiko because she was never there (or you could argue she was a career minded and once again a strong woman).  Wynn was no doubt a strong character, very masculine and very manipulative.  She is my pick for the best DS9 bad guy.  I don't think strong women make a "guy's show."

Bajoran women are some of the best in Sci-fi. Very headstrong and single-minded, and not at all represented as a lot of women have been. Let's see... There's Kira (and her mum), Kai Winn, Kai Opaka, Lupaza, Ziyal (although she's half-half), Varis Sul -from the storyteller- even Ro even though she wasn't on DS9.

...And yet they are all so very different from each other!

What draws me the most to DS9 (as to any story) is the characters. I don't think I can get into any show or book or whatever else unless there is at least one or a few characters that I can really start to like -- or care about.

Second, it's the storylines and the really complex, solid background from which those stories come. And I do like that it challenges the idealised future presented by TOS and Next Gen. (Not that I don't like those shows, but certainly their view of "humanity's future" is not as un-problematic as they would have us believe.)

I don't know that Deep Space Nine is more a "guy" show. I haven't really noticed such a thing myself. And speaking personally what has been described here as "guy" and "girl" elements -- some of these appeal to me equally, and some do not appeal just as equally.

From a guy's point of view I would say that DS9 has MORE strong female characters than any other Trek series: Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax(eventually), Kai Opaka, Major Kira, Kassidy Yates, the Female Shapeshifter(in her own way), Keiko O'Brien, Moogie(Quark's mom),Leeta(in her own way), even Kai Winn had her moments, not many, but one or two.

I hate all Trek except DS9 and some episodes of ENT and Voyager to be honest. This is because I am a misanthrope and how a human-made show like TNG just puts humans as the saints of the universe is quite disgusting to me.
